Nicolosi is the most interesting little town on the slope of Etna, already at a certain distance from Catania, so can be recommended for a short stay that as a must has to include climbing on Etna. As the public transport between the towns is not perfect, it is advisable to have enough time for all the transfers. Sometimes using a taxi is necessary though. Many local restaurants offer Sicilian food so there is enough to explore. For sure it is good to stay for two nights, to have enough time to enjoy the ambiance and do trekking on the volcano.
This is the best place to stay if you want climb the Etna. The others cities are too far away and you get more tired with the trip. there is no problem with parking because it's a small town, but offers a lot of restaurants and places to stay. Also I had my best dinner in Sicily here
The cable car area gets very crowded between 9 and 4 which is when it runs although the queue moves quite quickly. At the time of the review it cost 30 euros for the cable car and another 9 to get a bus to where you need a qualified guide to take you further. If you just get the cable car there are plenty of craters to explore but no lava!
In many ways, Nicolosi is a typical Sicilian village, although its designation as the 'Gateway to Etna' makes it perhaps a little more visited than most. Everywhere was within the walking distance and the bars and restaurants were of a good quality. There was a good selection too, from bars where you can enjoy a beer and an arancini through to fancier places to dine. Be warned though, Sicilians like to feed you and the portions are VERY generous! There is also a shop on Via Garibaldi that sells two litre bottles of local wine for three and a half Euros - and it was as good, if not better, than a typical £12 bottle from a British wine shop! We 'did Etna' (which towers over Nicolosi - very impressive), but our favourite visit was to the old Benedictine Monastery, around a 30 minute walk out of the heart of Nicolosi and 'up the hill' (or 5 minutes by car). Now housing administrative buildings, it is still possible to stroll around the ruins and other attractions such as the vineyard. Not for kids perhaps, but for 'thinking adults' who value history and culture it is wonderful. For a relatively small village it has everything - great food, culture, some wonderful walks, and even a volcano!
The weather was perfect for the trip by snow cat to the summit to view Mt Etna as she belched steam, smoke and debris. We heard many explosions and rumbling from the mountain during our short visit. Take warm clothing with you if you go to the summit even in summer.
Nicolosi is a nice village 20mins away from Etna, from main square there is bus service which is 5euro/ person with the return. distance to Taormina and Catania is not much. The biggest bonus of Nicolosi is the tranquility and peace there is.

The owner/host put a lot of effort in making our stay comfortable and to make us feel welcome. She even made a birthdaycake for me after noticing the date in my passport. We had the best breakfast ever. Every day she served different typical Sicilian products. She was very helpful in providing information about the things to do. They also had put a lot of effort in making the place nice in an arty way. It was very clean. It’s a great place for exploring the Etna region. Nicolosi is a nice little town with a great choice of restaurants.

Salvo was a most gracious host, welcoming us as we arrived tired well after dark. We had a charming country room with a great view of the lava dome on a cool crisp and clear night. The next morning we were served a hearty breakfast, family style, and sent off to climb Aetna with water and fresh local apples, while our luggage remained safe at the B&B in Nicolosi. Highly recommended.

Close to Nicolosi Center and Monti Rossi, it’s a little oasis, the owners advice about what to do around and how to get to places are worth gold. I had a very nice room, when it’s sunny one can enjoy spending half a day at the B&B itself.
