The old town is lovely, and pedestrian.
The old town is lovely, and pedestrian. Lots of ice cream shops and restaurants. it wasn't too crowded (mid-July). There is a lovely lakeside path, especially on the north side of town. You can take a boat to the island which only takes 5 mins. Walking around the island takes around 20 mins (it's an interior path so you don't see the lake much while on the island), but the church is lovely. You can also walk up (quite steep) to the 'Sacro Monte' on the hill with its many frescoed chapels and churches dedicated to St Francis of Assisi. It is a quiet and historic town - visit to the island was worthwhile and there is a nice park with views to walk in above the town. It is a long, steep, walk from the railways station though! A lovely small town with narrow, cobbled streets. Easy access to boat trips across the lake. The Basilica on Isola San Giulio is outstanding and definitely worth a visit. A lovely town devoid of traffic with a varied range of bars and restaurants. Lovely walks around the town and lake, plus boat trips to other towns on the lake and the island. It does get busy at weekends with visitors. There is a big car park to leave your car, about 5 min walk to town square; payment is automated and simple. Beautiful historic village with a peaceful lakeside piazza with many restaurants and cafes. Our favourite restaurant was La Piazzeta in the main square. Lots of gelato shops to help manage the summer heat too! Great little town to just walk about. Staying in the old town was really special. Just a great size to wander through the cobbled streets and enjoy the lake. A boat trip and walk around the island was stunning.
