Because of the two gondolas accessible in town, we were able to explore both sides and experience a variety of terrain, none extremely challenging which worked for our various fitness levels. The views are stupendous and the convenience of the huts along the trails for lunch, a drink or even a break from the rain were fantastic. A lovely town in the valley with plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants but also gave easy access up into the mountains via cable car/funicular. Also easy to get the bus to St Christina and Selva for other cables cars and walks. There is something for everyone in Ortesei and it is a special family destination as well. We loved the summer climate, the cool crisp air, and the beauty of the amazing Dolomites. The restaurants were great, there was ample shopping, and the locals were warm, friendly and helpful. We did not have a car, but did not need one with the free bus system that was very efficient. Delightful small town with lots of ways to access hiking trails / ski areas. Maybe a little less convenient to mountain bikers, but superb for everyone else. Ortisei is the perfect base spot for hiking in the Dolomites! So many options for hikes, 2 gondolas within walking distance for amazing views and a picturesque village for dining, shopping. The hike at Alpe di Suisse (alpine meadow) was amazing. We also visited Lago di Braies which was a beautiful 2 hour walk around the most gorgeous lake. We loved the Cafe Adler and Cafe Stetteneck for coffee and pastries in the morning. Turonda for dinner. The downtown shops are cute for gifts or essentials. It’s immaculate and I’ve never stayed anywhere with staff so accommodating and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble and their generosity had no limits. Fantastic breakfast buffet, really useful free bus service, if you don’t fancy walking up and down the hill, and full of information and tips to help plan your activities.
