If you like interesting old churches and a lively town...
If you like interesting old churches and a lively town centre Pavia is a great place to visit for a couple of days. About 5 miles out of town is an amazing monastery complex. You can get there by bus or train but these methods required too much walking in the intense heat so we took taxis. Well worth a visit. Pavia has wonderful medieval churches and a big museum at the Castello. The tomb of St. Augustine is amazing, and is a favorite stopping point of Pope Leo XIV. Boethius is also buried in Pavia. The city still keeps traditional Mediterranean hours (2-2 1/2-hour break midday), so it takes a day or two longer to see all the sites. We found good restaurants and would happily have stayed longer. It is said that April-May are the best months to visit, and it was already hot (80 degrees) at the end of May.Guest review byDaleUnited States - 10.0
I've visited Pavia a few times.
I've visited Pavia a few times. In a recent visit, I went to the Museo Kosmos, the Natural History Museum. Founded in the 1700's it's one of the world's oldest museums dedicated to natural history, but with a modern vibe - apparently over 500 exhibits (I didn't count them!), multimedia games, videos, interactive activities for children. Pavia has a modern centre and the older part has some lovely buildings. Certosa di Pavia, an old monastery, is 9 minutes by train (don't forget to validate your ticket in the machine next to the platform entrance). Do check the opening times, though. Four nights here.
Four nights here. Lovely old city generally ignored by tourists ( and Italians) Very old University. Some wonderful churches and museums - Civic in Castle is exceptional. Small centre so easy to get around and quite a bit is "pedestrianised". Bus 93 to Certosa di Pavia is easy.Guest review bypaulUnited Kingdom
