The ruins of Pompei are a wonderful snapshot into the past. As we knew were would be there for only 1 night and were working on a shoestring budget, before visiting we bought a book 'Pompeii - What To See in Only One Day' so we could take ourselves on a tour of the ruins without having to use a guide, either in person or digital! That worked really well - with maps and a commentary on each location. Apart from the ruins, Pompei has other advantages; we found prices were cheaper there than in Rome or Sorrento and there is also the local Circumvesuviana railway that runs from Naples to Sorrento. Tickets are good value and the trains stop at small towns and villages along the line that also have their own tourist attractions, such as Herculaneum and Oplonti. The whole area is dominated by the presence of Vesuvius in the background. There are several private tours and also the public transport Big Blue Bus that take passengers up to the crater. Sadly, when we were there in January, the road up to the crater was being repaired but that is definitely on the list for the next time we visit.
Enjoyed the ruins. Wear comfortable walking shoes. We took 4 hours to walk it through and still didn't see everything. Highly recommended Next day we went up to the volcano but later notified we couldn't get up the top because of ice. Wouldn't recommend volcano tour if you can't get up the top. Waste of money. Would have been great otherwise.
I loved the ruins and the hike to Mt. Vesuvius. It was an experience I will never forget. We've done it one day, I would have love to stay one more day to spend more time inside the ruins. We wasted a lot of time waiting for the bus to Mt. Vesusvius, I do not know if we could have just bit the bullet and took the taxi, though it was so expensive compared to the bus ride... but we waited more than an hour because the bus was late. Then we spent another hour to line up for tickets for the ruins--- so maybe skip-the-lines schemes are also okay though a bit more expensive? Would give more time to enjoy the place than standing for hours. Italian Gelatos is a must when we are in Italy, the ones we had in Pompei are so nice to look at and we we were tempted to get the big servings... be careful if you are not into too sweet ones... we ended up not finishing ours... toooo sweet!
Fascinating. I was struck by the quiet atmosphere at the Pompei ruins. I was awestruck by the surroundings and the history of the site and it was clear that others felt a reverence for the place too. An amazing window on life nearly two thousand years ago.
The archeological site spreads over 45 hectares, so you need more than 1 day if you want to visit every corner ( it will take 7 hours). The shortest itinerary - 2 hours. And you really need a professional guide!
Brilliant location. However it’s ruined by tour guides charging far too much for info about the ruins, and the attraction itself were very unhelpful to us. The office we bought the tickets off got annoyed because we asked for an audio guide instead as we didn’t want an actual group tour guide!

The room we stayed in was huge with a large balcony that overlooked Vesuvius and caught the sunset. The room was very clean. The car park was very secure and free. The location was great to get to both Pompeii and Herculaneum. There were some restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance. Overall, we were delighted with our stay and found the hotel great value for money!
