With over two and a half thousand years of history and astonishing classical beauty, Rome truly deserves to be called the Eternal City. From the breath-taking Colosseum to the famous Trevi Fountain, Rome has something for every taste.
Enjoy a freshly brewed espresso on one of the Rome’s popular piazzas and admire the everlasting beauty of frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. Caravaggio’s paintings in Santa Maria del Popolo are a definite must-see.
Rome is also home to the Pantheon, built in 125 AD, the stunning St. Peter’s Basilica as well as another classic, the Roman Forum. Many of the world’s most famous churches, museums and galleries are just around the corner allowing you to have it all.
Make sure you explore the popular Trastevere and its cafes and trattorias, sit down on the Spanish Steps or just relax and enjoy Rome’s picturesque and sunny atmosphere. Rome will surely convince you that it is one of Italy’s gems.

We stayed in Aventino in a lovely quiet apartment. We could walk to quite a few places from there but also chose to use the buses. Google maps is fine for going places but highly inaccurate for timetables. Best apps were Moovit and Citymapper. Tips on using toilets in Italy. There are very few public toilets so you have to buy something to use cafe/restaurant toilets BUT there toilets on either side of the square at the Vatican for free. You can also visit the Monument to Victor Emmanuel II for free and they also have 2 sets of toilets in separate locations on your way through the building. If you want to swim in Rome you can catch the train to the beach or pay expensive prices at some hotels for use of their pools. There are public pools in Rome but there are all sorts of rules about times to swim and times they are open. Food is amazing. Don’t be afraid to go off the beaten track and eat in the quieter streets, we have had some of our best meals in the smaller local restaurants. Trastevere was great to wander round. Aventino has an amazing market, Testaccio Market, that uses a whole block and has all sorts of things especially in the food lines. There is an amazing Pyramid of Caius Cestius near Ostience. You can follow the wall round Via Raffaele Persichetti and turn left into Via Caio Cestio and there is a cemetery for Non Catholics. Here, Keats and Shelly, both famous poets in their time are buried. We did the walk around the Jewish Quarter for something different. It was very interesting.
Rome is a dirty city, few people speak English but they try to help. There is a lot of theft in the city. There are no toilets, and if you find one, it is terribly dirty. The buses are inadequate and overcrowded, they don't run often, there is no bus departure schedule at the bus stops. There is a lack of organization and order in Rome, I do not recommend traveling with small children. Anyone who does not like dirt and noise should not visit Rome.
The city seems to want tourists only for its need for money. While the attractions are interesting, I found the city taxes per night unreasonable, entrance prices to various places, including places of worship, trying to recoup money lost during Covid by bilking the tourists. Would not consider returning because of the lack of bang for the money spent. I would rather be charitable to my home or a poor country’s needs over Italian needs.
We enjoyed walking to the cafes located everywhere around Rome. We felt perfectly safe, the people are nice and welcoming and almost everyone speaks English. If they don't just show them a address or point to a menu. We used Taxi's to travel. We did some tours and saw the main attractions like ancient Rome and the Vatican. I highly recommend the golf cart tours because there is a lot of walking and we are older. If you need a wheelchair this might not be the best destination. Stairs everywhere, no ramps. if you are older pay attention to the weather a lot of places are not air conditioned.
Beautiful city full of art, architecture and history, Terrific atmosphere and superb food. Perhaps a touch more expensive than most of Europe but can still be done on a budget. Good transport system at very reasonable price, watch out for taxi drivers, though!
Rome is beautiful place to explore to, it is rich in history and there is so much to do and learn of ancient history. The Vatican is located there therefore its the centre of christianity. However, english language barriers will make the holiday challenging as most Italians in my experience doesn’t speak english and because of it, they are not friendly to tourist ready to ask for directions. Most of them will give you a good poker face in order to avoid you asking or even answering your question. The road or cobble pavement also a challenge as it is uneven , have to keep an eye on your way if you do not want to fracture your ankles. Train stations not friendly with luggage - no ramps and lift to make life of tourist easy! Otherwise, would have been perfect experience!!
Rione Monti, Rome
Residenza Maritti is a marvelous hotel. I have stayed here perhaps 20 times in the last 7 years or so, whilst living in Italy. It is quite simply one of the nicest places I have ever stayed at. The location is nothing short of spectacular; the staff and owners very kind and helpful; the rooms full of character and history as well as being spotlessly clean; the rooftop terrace has breathtaking views of ancient Rome. When I come to Rome, I always stay at Residenza Maritti. It is a wonderful place to enjoy the Eternal City from.
Central Station, Rome
This is my second time in Italy and I always liked to stay close to the central station so the location for this hotel is perfect. The rooms are great, the host left water and other goodies which was such a nice touch! They also have all the facilities you need in the room and they are perfectly clean. But the main point here is the staff. The host was super friendly and went above and beyond to help. I followed all his recommendations and had a perfect experience in Rome. I would definitely recommend this place!
Hotel is very conveniently placed for travellers who come for sight-seeing in Rome but don't want to stay right in the centre, as there are two public bus lines close by and they operate frequently. It is even possible to park a private car at the hotel but the number of places is limited. Our room was perfectly comfortable and clean, fresh towels every day, mini fridge, safe deposit box, air-condition. Breakfast included more variety of foods than in many hotels in Italy (eggs, bacon, cold meats...).
Beautiful spacious room, so nice to come back to the room after spending the day exploring the city. The bed is also very comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful and gave us ideas what to do, transport to take etc. The breakfast was excellent! With staff clearing your plate and cutlery and giving you new ones after each helping. Also the hotel is just minutes away from Rome Termini so it is easy to go take a bus or train to everywhere that you want to visit in Rome and Italy!
This hotel is situated within 5 minutes walk from Roma Termini, very convenient if you come to Rome with a train or a plane. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is relatively rich for Rome, as you will get some ham and salami, boiled eggs. The rooms are small, but not to the point of being inconvenient. Air conditioning is working, and it does not smell with fungi as most of the units in Italy. There is an elevator, so you do not have to carry your baggage up.
Rione Monti, Rome
I liked the 2 bedrooms, divided by a slider door, small kitchenette was very convenient. Also had laundry, it was great would stay again and definitely recommend!! I would stay longer as I was only there for 2 nights but next time if I had to stay again and longer I would choose this place. Place was very clean and beds were comfortable! Has a small elevator for your luggage, there are a few stairs to get there just an FYI which is very common it Italy especially in Rome.
It is a small hotel close to the train station and 20-30 min to the main attraction. We’ve been upgraded for free and got the rooms on the 1st floor with a nice garden view and street view. Clean rooms, working aircon, comfortable beds, fresh linen, towels. Overall nice experience) and Super nice stuff. It was possible to leave our bags for a few hours after check out. Greetings to Giuseppe from Belarussian family ☺️Italy is always about people❤️
Pantheon, Rome
Perfect location in what was our first visit Rome and has now become a firm favourite area we would stay in time and time again. Staff were courteous and kind, really polite, and lots of nice little touches to make our stay lovely. The daily happy hour 6-8 was a huge bonus! The breakfast was the best we had in Italy, even with no onsite kitchen fresh scrambled egg and fresh fruit and coffee (just my choice, many other options) was delicious.
Really lovely boutique hotel in a great location. Everything was immaculately clean, the room was spacious and there were nice products in the bathroom. There is a small fridge with a few mini bar items. The staff were really helpful in explaining the best places to visit in Rome; and where not to go after dark! I was also able to leave my luggage there both before and after my stay to fit in with travel plans. Highly recommended!
Pantheon, Rome
This was the best place we stayed in Italy. Nice and new, modern and contemporary. Felt extremely clean, comfortable beds and we were lucky enough to have a view of Piazza Venezia from our room. Great location, we walked everywhere and didn’t have to use public transport once. Plus the breakfast! Pietro really went the extra mile to make breakfast each morning that bit special. Will definitely be back when we return to Rome.
The hotel is a very easy 15 minute walk from the central train station. The location is very good as you're on a main street in Rome and can get to many places easily. The room was just fine; clean; good shower; comfy bed. Breakfast had hard boiled eggs (seemingly common in Italy vs scrambled eggs), plus meats, cheeses and fruits. Decent. The room was shaded well at night so that it remained dark. Good place.
We booked this hotel after we had to extend our stay in Rome two extra days. The hotel has recently had a major overhaul with new elevators which actual stop on your floor. The AC was great and the rooms were very quite and comfortable. The location was next to the Roma Termini train station but the rooms were very quite. Highly recommend it traveling around Italy by train.
The Hotel Donna Francesca was absolutely perfect for the 6 of us on our last night in Italy. It was wonderfully situated, immaculately clean, very comfortable, and the staff was most friendly, helpful and accommodating. We had 6 family members in 5 rooms, and we were all extremely happy. We would stay here again, no question!
Perfect location for walking to many highlights of Rome and even 10 minutes from Roma Termini train station making it convenient for catching trains to other parts of Italy. Air conditioning was working well, extra blankets, cheap minibar, nice shower, comfortable bed, secure feeling hotel.
The hotel is perfectly located in the Monti neighborhood and has a lovely rooftop bar. We were only there for one night, but it was a great way to spend our last evening in Italy. It was also great to have a full breakfast waiting for us the next day.
This is the best hotel I've stayed through all the travels I've done this year in Italy. It's extra clean and very accommodating, staff is very helpful and knowledgeable.
Navona, Rome
This was our first time in Italy and Primo Piano was exactly what we were looking for. An authentic hotel experience. Clean, neat, convenient location. It was excellent.
This was the perfect hotel, the breakfast was amazing, the staff was amazing, the location is perfect for sightseeing. I think this was the best place I’ve stayed in Italy.
The warmth of the staff was exceptional. The location of the hotel just could not be better for those wanting to be at the centre of Rome, Italy and the Universe.
Appio Latino, Rome
The property was super clean and organized like a hotel. It’s super cozy and the furniture gives you that feel of Italy which we loved.
