FAQs about hotels in San Gimignano

A Tempting Tuscan Sun

San Gimignano, with the Italian sun glistening intently on its 14 remaining towers, cuts a dramatic figure from its position high on a Tuscan hill overlooking vineyards. However, it is when you get up-close-and-personal with this medieval-walled city and crane your neck to the blue sky that you truly appreciate its mesmerising beauty.

If you take away the swarming summer tourists circling the piazzas of San Gimignano, then this city offers you a wonderful trip back in time. The main square, Piazza della Cisterna, is surrounded by Romanesque buildings and Piazza del Duomo features Torre Grossa, the city’s tallest tower.

San Gimignano, originally an Entruscan village, was part of the ancient pilgrim route Via Francigena joining France to Rome. Its name was derived from the Bishop of Modena and is well known today as the Town of Fine Towers.

The 12th-century Collegiate Church of San Gimignano is a worth a visit with its wonderful collection of frescoes, and it also includes the Religious Art Museum.

Whether it is sitting on a restaurant terrace sipping some local Vernaccia wine or attending the lively Thursday Market, Booking.com has a range of San Gimignano hotels, guest houses and apartments for your stay. And just out of the city are options such as farm stays and country houses in the Tuscan countryside.

We liked exploring the entire City and were fastinated with the old buildings. Only negative comment would be fact you need to pay for the use of the washroom. Most were dirty and lacked toilet seats.

San Gimignano is a very vibrant town with lots of good eating places. You will queue for the good ice cream shops up in the square though. Be prepared for a long wait. Good that it's very pedestrianised but a bit slight hill at start may not be to everyone's capability. Good amount of different shops if you like that kind off thing. Market on a Thursday provides a different buying experience

San Gimignano is a beautiful little place especially before 9am and after 6pm when the streets are quieter. Between these hours it does get very busy as it is a popular tourist stop off. It is full of history and very easy to walk around. There are many places to eat and drink and lots of "souvenir" shops where you can buy wine, cheese, olive oil paintings etc. It is nestled in the countryside, nice for a walk or drive. There are buses too to take you to surrounding places including the train station at Poggibonsi (about 15-20 mins) and Sienna (just over an hour). Tickets can be bought easily from the taboccnist on the right-hand side as you walk up through town.

Spectacular location and view. The roof top terrace was quintessential Tuscany with its incredible view. Exceptionally roomy apt with separate mini-suites for 2 of the bedrooms, really exceptional. Large rooms and spacious overall. Wonderful and attentive hosts who were very quick to provide advice and updates as needed.

San Gimignano is a unique gem - a beautifully preserved piece of antiquity. Unfortunately, it is a bit overrun by tour groups during the day, but early morning and from late afternoon onward, it is truly wonderful. It's well worth a longer stay as there are interesting exhibits/museums, absolutely magnificent hikes in the breathtaking countryside, and easy day trips to places like Siena and Colle Val d'Elsa.

Casa Campatelli: we enjoyed this museum, which used to be the house of a well-to-do family. They tell you a lot about the town's history in the introduction video Pasticceria Armando e Marcella: the best pasticceria (acually, almost the only one) we found during our two weeks in Tuscany. We came back on another day to San Gimignano just for that. San Gimignano somehow has a special nice vibe comparing to other Tuscan towns. We also went hiking on Montauto loop next to San Gimignano. It is very versatile: you walk through forests, olive groves, orchards, villages, vineyards. It is said to be 6 km long on Komoot, but was 12 km according to our trackers.

Located in a very small, quit town near San Gimignano. Not a touristy area. Great to get away from crowds. There is a local bus that stops right outside of the hotel if you need to take pubic transit. Quiet and small hotel. Clean, quaint, and upscale for a very reasonable price. The best part was being able to go to the family's winery on the other side of town and do a tasting of many wines from the area. The family was so hospitable, kind, and took pride and care in their business.

A simply stunning location. Our stay was everything we hoped for and more and we were very sad to leave. Manfredi is a superb and welcoming host who makes the best focaccia in Italy! We were treated to fresh loaves each morning for breakfast along with his own olive oil. He even had English breakfast tea and milk which was brilliant as a tea drinker travelling in Europe. Ginger and Macchia, the cats, were very cute. A must stay if you are in the area.

After touring around Italy, Venice, Rome and Florence we stayed at the Hotel & Restaurant Casolare Le Terre Rosse for some much needed down time. The pool and grounds were fabulous and the staff were great. We ate in the restaurant in the evening and had some bar meals during the day, both were very good and a fair price. We treated ourselves to the 'Tasting Menu' one evening with the matched wines and it was great we would definitely recommend.

The room was very clean and has everything you need Biggest bonus was walking 20 min into San Gimignano for dinner. Beautiful sunset walks looking at the old town as you enter it.

A wonderful location with a beautiful view of San gimigano. Barbara was so lovely and welcoming. The pool has the best view. A traditional, delicious Italian breakfast each morning and chatting with other guests was wonderful. Spotlessly clean. If I'm ever back in Italy, I'm definitely coming back to Barbara's!
