It's a nice place with sandy beaches. If you want to do more snorkelling, I'd probably recommend other places with rocky beaches. You can book boat trips to Portofino/San Fruttoso and the Cinque Terre. We booked the Portofino/San Fruttoso one and it was very nice, snorkelled a bit in San Fruttoso and took a stroll through Portofino. We didn't have time to visit the Cinque Terre, but they are worth seeing and even staying there (I visited Riomaggiore and Monterosso back in 2018, they are nicer than Sestri Levante). Overall, for some quiet, nice time on the beach, you can go to Sestri Levante, the beaches are big enough. We walked from our accommodation to the beach and not much else, didn't take any buses. We liked the informality and the choice of restaurants and bars. If exploring is part of your holiday, it is probably best done by the local trains which are frequent, clean, quiet and cheap. The town is pretty nice, but compared with Santa Margarita Ligure which we have visited before, it lacks something. For example great restaurants. The prices in restaurants are high, but the quality is somehow not there. Also the vibe of the city lacks something - but of course this is completely subjective. The station (Riva Trigoso) is less than 10min walk away. If you walk down the riverside to the seafront you will find a nice beach with a few cafes/bars.
