The Very Best of Greece and Rome
A goldmine of Greek and Roman heritage, Siracusa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Necropolis of Pantalica in hills to the north-west.
Siracusa itself has a necropolis within the amazing Neapolis archaeological park, which also houses Roman amphitheatre and altar remains, as well as one of the largest Greek theatres ever built. Legend has it that the site includes the tomb of Archimedes, who was born here.
The ancient Greeks founded the city (also known as Syracuse) and Cicero even considered it the greatest of all. Columns from that period were used to build the Baroque cathedral, and the Fountain of Arethusa dates to the same era. Both are within Ortygia, a walled peninsula jutting into the turquoise Mediterranean Sea. Also here are ruins of the Roman temple of Apollo, and at the tip of the peninsula is the 13th-century Maniace Castle.
The fabulous Siracusa Archaeological Museum houses relics from all these periods, and is located by the Catacombs of Saint John. Opposite them both is the modern conical spire of the Madonna delle Lacrime Sanctuary church.
Aside from all this history, Siracusa also has plenty of pavement cafes and restaurants, and lovely sandy beaches overlooked by luxury hotels, cheap B&Bs and holiday homes available on Booking.com.

I love Ortigia which is why I took a coworker there who is just exploring Sicily for the first time. For sunset you walk to the western side of the island but you can find many good places for a cold drink and to watch the sun set. A short boat and bus tour added a new experience. Stay in Oritigia if you want to explore the historical and cultural sites. It is easy to walk around, is a lovely old town with lots of restaurants, bars and small shops. Trains and buses mainly operate from the Syracuse proper and it is a much more spread out and modern city. We travelled to Syracuse from Taorimina by direct train (2 hrs). Most of our time was spent in Ortigia but we did have a trip to the archeological park in Syracuse(bus/taxi trip needed) which was worth a visit but very confusing in terms of accessing it and getting around it.Guest review byAlex - 10.0

The host was super helpful and met us at the property although we weren’t there until 22.30. He also recommended an excellent restaurant. Ortigia is where you need to stay and be Perfect for strolling through the streets, shopping, eating, drinking, soaking up the atmosphere and people watching There isn't a beach as such on Ortigia-mostly stone areas or areas with platforms. Best bet the beach club Zefiro Solurium. Which is next to the most beach like beach. And whilst it is miniscule, dipping in the sea is nice. And steps from the beach club Moon in Ortigia is a plant based restaurant and cocktail place. Amazing! In Siracusa itself a visit to the archaeological Park is a must.
