Lake Views from Every Angle
On a narrow peninsula protruding into Lake Garda, Sirmione is a wonderful town famed for its multi-turreted castle, Roman remains and hot springs.
The 13th-century lakeside castle makes quite an impressive sight as you cross its drawbridge to enter the old town beyond. From its walls there are lovely views of red-roofed buildings towards the trees hiding the ruins of a huge villa that belonged to 1st-century BC Roman poet Catullus. Part of the complex included baths featuring the thermal waters, and the town still has a spa today on the opposite side of the promontory.
Nearby is the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore with its 15th-century frescoes, and the surrounding narrow, cobbled streets are home to stone buildings and several Sirmione hotels on Lake Garda. The majority of hotels are mid-range, but there are still a few 4 and 5-star hotels in Sirmione to choose from.
Booking.com also has lots of accommodations by the lake in the newer part of town, and its Lugana Vecchia area has a UNESCO World Heritage-listed prehistoric site.
To the west of Sirmione is the lakefront town of Desenzano del Garda, while to the east is Peschiera del Garda, close to the Gardaland and Canevaworld theme parks. The nearest airport is Verona Catullo Airport to the southeast.

The old town of Sirmione is very picturesque, lots of restaurants and shops. Still very busy when we visited in early October and would be even more so in the summer months, quieter in the evenings when day trippers have gone. We loved Sirmione.
We loved Sirmione. We went to all the places of interest there and to Bardolino for the market. We had a spa day which was just lovely and the spa hotel was only 5 mins walk from the apartment. If we’d have had longer we would have gone to Verona for the day and to other towns on the edge of Garda. Also maybe have done a wine tour. Great location in the centre of Sirmione.
Great location in the centre of Sirmione. Lots a restaurants to choose from. Our visit was at the beginning of October, however the town was very busy. There is a bus stop just outside of the city allowing easy transfers to Verona etc. Don’t rely too much on the bus timetable, the buses were normally about 20 minutes late. Sirmione was a real find for Lake Garda. It has the amazing old town with its cobbled streets and history, but also has the newer town which has loads of restaurants and shops, as well as the marina. It is really easy to get to other parts of the lake from Sirmione, either by car or by boat, so it was a great base. A beautiful place with numerous restaurants and cafés :) Also ideal as a base for exploring other towns on Lake Garda. The Sunset Cruise was relaxing and enjoyable, returning via the castle moat was amazing!
