I wouldn't rush back to Taranto. The modern town is very built up and feels a bit poor/run-down -- imagine a slightly more upmarket Naples. The old town is very dilapidated once you head away from the castle. Parts are totally derelict with more stray cats that human inhabitants. We chose Taranto as a base to explore Alberobello, Locorotondo and Matera, but would have been better staying somewhere more central.Guest review byJohnUnited Kingdom - 10.0

The old town was really nice, great shops, we wanted to go to De castello(castle) but weren't able as the only had Italian guide and wasn't allowed to walk around ourselves, even though the tourist information Centre said the times on a sheet in English. Not really a "tourist" area - VERY Italian! Few English speakers and be prepared for second class service in restaurants/bars as a non local/Italian. Otherwise, town center and seafront interesting for a short visit. Parking is very limited and difficult. Public car parks all seem to have guys "helping" you to park, for a fee I suppose? We were lucky to find a very friendly and helpful traffic warden who helped us buy a suitable parking ticket without the input of the resident "parking fairies"! We stayed on the island which is the oldest part of the settlement. If you’re comfortable in the narrow, crowded streets of old Naples you’ll be happy here; if not, look at hotels in the more modern shopping /administration area. The National Archaeological Museum is modern, well displayed and with excellent information panels in good English. Well worth a morning. Access to churches was more hit and miss. The receptionists were super friendly, Francesca showed me the hotel's photo album of "before and after" - really worth seeing what they achieved. And its a treat to see the original features! There are the old phone booths in the foyer even, and the lifts are a classic treat. It's very comfortable, great value for money, the breakfast was nice and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The position is perfect for visiting the city too.
