Verbania is a really good base for a stay on Lake Maggiore.
Verbania is a really good base for a stay on Lake Maggiore. It has 2 parts - Intra where the main ports are, and Pallanza. There are lots of boats leaving and arriving every day at Intra, both passenger-only and ferries with cars, so very useful for exploring other parts of the lake. Intra has a nice sea front and an old town with little courtyards and cafes dotted all over it. The highlight of Pallanza is Villa Taranto, the botanic gardens. It seems to be modernized recently as the furniture, all the rooms including the bath room and the kitchen seem to be brand new. Everything is of high quality and good taste, and they spend a lot of time to think about every detail. The place is just a few minutes walk from the beach and nice restaurants and bars. We had a room on the first floor with a balcony which maximises the view. The bed was top quality, with cotton sheets; the bathroom provided everything you could need; and the breakfasts were superb, with everything from muesli, fresh fruit and yoghurt to more standard cooked.
