There is a 1-day bus pass for 600 yen (as of April 2019) and it brings you in clockwise and anti-clockwise directions along iconic landmarks in the area. From Tsuruga Castle to the Aizu Samurai Residences to Higashiyama Onsen to Sazaedo Temple. Absolute value for money. A city really rich in sad history.
I love Aizuwakamatsu & have been here several times. Firstly, it is surrounded by mountains. Secondly, it has an amazing history, which is honoured throughout the Aizu region. Favourite places in & around the city: Tsurugajo, Iimoriyama, samurai residences, Higashiyama Onsen. There are lots of interesting places to see in Aizuwakamatsu & throughout Fukushima prefecture. Check out areas around Aizuwakamatsu:, Ouchijuku, Enzoji temple at Aizu-Yanaizu (where the legend of Akabeko originated), Kitakata, Mishima, hot springs, ski fields. Go nuts & have a great time!
Aizuwakamatsu is a very good place to explore. I visited Ouchijuku because of the winter festival but the town itself was full of sightseeing spots. I went to Tsuruga-jo and the Samurai Village and it was very beautiful and big.
The castle is newly renovated ,they have exhibition and information all the way to go to the top of the castle so if you have enough time you gonna learning the history of this area . Recommend to go to the palace before you go to mount Iiliyama ,you will appreciate more.
Nice place to stay full of history and nice nature around. We have enjoyed our walk to Samurai’s place and Tsogura is just amazing. The hotel is a bit far from center so you need to drive to the places around.
The people are very nice. There are interesting places to visit especially if you like history. There are hot springs if relaxation is your thing. There are loop buses for easy transportation. Delicious traditional local dishes.

- Staff is very nice, there are welcome drink (sake or hot tea). Staff will bring you and your luggage to the room by herself. Staff try to advice everything in the room in Japanese. - Excellent dinner with Yaki-niku (grilled meet) - Excellent breakfast - 3 different hot bath that you can use and the bath will switch from male to female and female to male every morning. It's mean you can use the different hot bath when you stay in this hotel.

The staff was very friendly. Breakfast was excellent. The building itself was a little old, but it was a wonderful experience in a traditional Japanese style ryokan. If you are going to the Higashi onsen area, this is very convenient. If you are exploring Aizuwakamatsu, be aware this is not within walking distance of the station and you will have to use the bus system, which is relatively cheap for a day pass.

The location of the Washington Hotel was ideal, staff were friendly and happy to accommodate and requests that we had, the room was standard business hotel affair but adequately met our needs. Round the corner is a seven-eleven, and around the other side is a family mart. The hotel itself is also very close to the train station and close to tourist bus Haikara-san stop H39 and Akabe stop A-2!
