If you enjoy transportation adventures, Hakone is the place for you! In one day with the Free Pass you can take the mountain train from Hakone-Yumoto up to the funicular (which they call a cable car) and then there are two cable cars (they call them ropeways) that you take up to smokin' (literally) Mt. Hakone and then down to the lake and from there you can take a ship across and if you like roller coaster rides, take the K bus back to Hakone--11 switch backs at breakneck speed! There are also onsen nearby and lots of tourist shops with a variety of local specialties. Really fun and highly recommended! Oh, and if you like art, definitely pit stop at the Open Air museum. V. kid-friendly and also great to explore for a couple hours or a whole day if you can spare it!

    Hakone is great.

Hakone is great. It is nice in the summer because it is probably 10-15 degrees cooler than the cities. You have lots to see. The Open Air Museum is fun and very worthwhile. The Tozan Mountain railway. The Mishima Skyway with views of Mt Fuji is closeby. and Lake Ashinoko very nice. It's a little more rural though touristy. We went during the Summer Festival season and got to see fireworks. Great Destination. Alsok it's a hot spring town.

Plan ahead to make use of the Hakone day pass (a must). The Hakone day pass helped but we misplaced one of the passes half way through our trip and had to pay. Bus drivers were very adamant about paying with cash if the physical pass was not found. Alternative ways of checking validity of the pass should be provided. Or provide lanyards to carry the passes - simple!!

Open air museum exceeded our expectations, the loop was fun to do. If you do the lake Ashi cruise and don’t mind paying a bit more, get first class tickets to skip the queues and access the much nicer (and less crowded) cabins and decks at the front of the ship. We also enjoyed the Skywalk bridge park a bit outside the loop (we got great views of Mount Fuji). Watch for the last buses though, some routes finish early (around 5pm) or you might get stranded on a mountain road. Renting a car from Odawara might have worked better for us as we also had a lot of luggage.

We purchased the Hakone 2 day pass which was fantastic value, around $50 Aussie dollar’s and it included so many things incl. ropeway, cable cars, lake cruise and much more. Fantastic day out that just flowed so easily. Loved the town but be aware everything closes super early so get out to eat by 7pm at the latest.

Hakone was a breath of fresh air after busy Tokyo and the open air museum and ryokan experience were a complete highlight! The ropeway ride was cool, but if pressed for time, I'd skip the "pirate ship" (it's a ferry boat) as it took up 2 hours of our limited time in Hakone. I think we probably could have had a 2nd day so we didn't feel as rushed but the 24 hours we had there were very lovely but in retrospect I would have been happy just soaking up onsen water at the ryokan and exploring the open-air museum.

Our host for the time, Mia, was just amazing. She works hard to make the experience of staying at this hotel truly memorable. It's the best accommodation experience we have ever had, and so personable. Everything from check-in, to the traditional Japanese foods for breakfasts and dinners, the private room-allocated onsen and check-out were just outstanding. I can't wait to return to Hakone and stay here.

Beautiful hotel in a beautiful location, with great access to the boat boarding and cable car points of the Hakone Loop. Our room was clean and very comfortable, and our private balcony onsen bath was a real highlight. Food was delicious, and the free cool green tea in the lobby was lovely to enjoy whilst looking at the view across the lake. Highly recommend this hotel and would return again.

The hotel staff were very welcoming and super attentive. The hotel was very clean and dinner was exceptional. They specially catered for a vegan meal which was the best meal in our whole Japan trip! We really enjoyed the private onsen and dressing up in a kimono. We would definitely come back again if we visited Hakone again.

The Hotel is in a convenient location not too far from Hakone Yumoto station. The staff were very helpful & attentive. Breakfast was Japanese style & staff took the time to explain dishes & how to prepare food. I especially loved the hot tub on our balcony & the private onsen. Lovely & peaceful place to stay.

Hakone village is a great stop for travellers interested in Mt Fuji region. Hotel is in a pleasant neighbourhood with wonderful surprises nearby. There are places to eat and explore within the proximity of the hotel. this was our first Onsen experience in Japan and it was great.
