This is a world heritage site not to be missed.

This is a world heritage site not to be missed. The kindness and quiet beauty and the FOOD were heavenly. A friend suggested we go and stay a night in a temple for the full experience, (although a day trip is fine,) and we are so glad that we did. The Buddhist Okunoin cemetery is the largest in Japan and is lit by lanterns at night for a beautiful otherworldly (but actually this world! ;) unforgettable evening walk. Beautiful temples and sacred sites to visit, and many shops and little cafes to enjoy. We stayed in the Sanboin temple and were so delighted by our experience.

Don't miss touring the cemetery.

Don't miss touring the cemetery. It is amazing with so many different types of monuments and statuary. We toured it without a guide during the day light hours and feel that we really didn't miss anything by not seeing it by moonlight. The town has an ancient feel to it and is worth spending at least one night. I just wish that there were more choices for hotels as the only choices seem to be a Guest House and a multitude of Monasteries.

Koyasan is a historic, spiritual, naturally beautiful location. The ability to be around active temples and attend fire ceremony was unforgettable. The information center and excellent bus system made it easy to navigate. However, if you like to walk, most sights are easily walked to, as it is quite flat. There were several nice coffee houses and the place that offers night tours of Okunoin also is a bar in the evening, serving excellent local craft beers. A surprise.

I came here for the history and the experience of staying in a monastery/pilgrim lodging, but I left with much more than that, as all the people I met here were wonderful, from fellow travelers to local cafe owners. One word of advice would be to take your time exploring Oku no In cemetery, as it's worth a good long contemplative walk.

Thoroughly enjoyed experiencing how the monks live and eat.

Thoroughly enjoyed experiencing how the monks live and eat. We arrived on a Friday afternoon, wondered into the info centre Saturday & they were very helpful. Walked through the cemetery & then had lunch in one of the cafes open. Not many open on a Saturday or Sunday. Sunday a.m we experience the Ceremony half by the Monks in the main temple. Wouldn’t visit again in the winter as it’s extremely cold.

Okunoin cemetery --meditative walk-- was lovely.

Okunoin cemetery --meditative walk-- was lovely. Would have enjoyed having more time to visit the town. We only stayed one night (which is good, because it was very expensive). However, the train logistics from Okayama meant that we ararived in Koyasan about 2pm and so had very little time to see it. We left after lunch the following day. Two fuller days and one night would have been ideal.

Loved how spacious the room was, there was even a couch and small TV. Tommy was great at explaining what was open and closed in the area. Very clean and modern, always looked forward to going back to the guesthouse after a day of exploring. Great shower and bidet. Would recommend to anyone staying at Koyasan as an alternative to temple lodging. It's a convenient location for walking to all the sights in Koyasan and for taking the bus.

This was an authentic Temple stay just as promised. Beautiful quiet spot in Koyasan. Everything was as described. Perfectly presented meals were served in private dining areas for each party staying - around 12 people in total. Food was delicious. Morning ceremony was included and we were encouraged to partake (don't go down in your Yukata though!) Peaceful and contemplative. Would like to have had more time in Koyasan, one night

Warm welcome in an out of the ordinary place. Felt like a privileged dive into the Japanese bouddhiste culture. Bonus points for the organized tour of the Koyasan cemetery with one of the monk of the Temple.

I now can't imagine going to Koyasan without a temple stay. Our room was gorgeous and had a view of a Japanese garden. The highlight was meditation, morning prayers and the beautiful breakfast and dinner.

The experience of staying in a temple was incredible and a great attraction in it's own. We also enjoyed traditional japanese food. The location is also very central and close to everything in Koyasan
