Absolutely loved Nagano, so friendly and clean and easy to get around. We lucked out and arrived when the the dance festival was on which was really fun. There are lovely restaurants, good shopping and it’s easy to get around. The old part of the town and the temple are beautiful. We took the bus to see the snow monkeys as well which was worth every penny, even though it was 30 degrees they were still in the onsen, it was magical!

we loved staying in central Nagano.

we loved staying in central Nagano. We were only a few minutes walk to the station and our final destination. the staff were very friendly and welcoming even at 9.30 pm. The bed and our room were very comfortable. All that we needed.

So much shopping to do both local or duty free.

So much shopping to do both local or duty free. Many sights to see and explore and of course close to the ski fields. Be sure to explore outside of the Train/Bus complex for shopping to compare prices. The variety of foods both fresh or pre-packaged are mind boggling. Awesome sushi, sensational bakery products and outstanding wines. Amazing variety of restaurants and as always all the staff are extremely friendly. I left my mobile phone on the bus seat and their staff ran around the area until they found me to return it! So wonderful!

We were there for a couple days just before we go snowboarding at Hakuba. Although it's a main station, the city is quite quiet which if you have been to Tokyo, it's totally opposite. It's just not what you expected. But if you like nature this is one of go-to place. You need to explore outskirt of Nagano(for example Togakushi Shrine) but it would take a while to get there.

The city of Nagano is easy to access on foot, which is how we like to travel. You can easily walk around the downtown area, and the shopping street leading up to the shrine was the best we have experienced in Japan. We did not have time to go to the Olympic museum, but will plan to do that if we return to Nagano. You would need to take transportation to the museum as it is outside of the general area.

We primarily used our time in Nagano as a base to visit other places such as Snow Monkey Park, Matsumoto, Obuse and Shibu Onsen, but ended up cutting our journey short by a day as we did not find a lot of things to do in Nagano itself. There is nothing wrong with the city - easy and safe to get around, very clean, nice places to eat etc. but after seeing the Zenkoji temple and some wandering around the main streets and backstreets, there was not a lot else that was of interest to us.

Perfect ryokan in remote Japan. The experience was beyond expectations. The shrines in the area are superb! Everything was perfect and the hostess was very helpful. The food is amazing (but there's too much!)! The ryokan can be easily access by car from Nagano. It is a 35min scenic drive. I suggest nissan-rent-a-car right next to the train station. Everything went smoothly.

The breakfast buffet was fantastic! We love how we can go along the line to setup a Japanese style breakfast and then another one for International style breakfast. The location is great, just opposite the train station. There are lots of eateries around and hotel staff were extremely helpful with our suitcase transport services.

Room was very spacious and just a couple of minutes walk from the train station. Although the furnishings are a little dated, the large room space was a delight to have in Japan. You can also rent electric bicycles from the hotel, although I've never tried it.
