The street the hotel is in is beautiful. There's lots to see and do nearby. You can go to the lake. There's a couple of really amazing cafés and restaurants nearby. The locals really want you to try and spend time in their town competing with Kyoto can't be easy, but it's well worth spending a day exploring Otsu.

Enjoy the 1st day in Kyoto.
Enjoy the 1st day in Kyoto. Do the Hop On Hop Off bus (both Blue and Red Lines), which stops at all the major sites. Then train to Otsu for relaxing stay at Lake Biwa. Go on a sightseeing / luncheon cruise or organised trips - example the cable car at Sakamoto. Plenty of places to eat including 36th floor of Lake Biwa Otsu Princess Hotel with great views.

From my perspective, there wasn't much to do within a mile walk of the property.
Only one restaurant off site in that mile two convenience stores and if you walk a bit further a pretty mellow "redlight" district

Otsu Town seems not beautiful at first sigh. But go to have a walk behind the hotel. The countryside is like a Miyazaki movie getting real ! You can go near from there : temples, beach, ski station with incredible view… But with the hotel’s shuttle and the station you have Kyoto, very near, Nara, Osaka a little farther. You’ve got all Kansaï by JR… A good tip : when you go to the station to Shirahige shrine, don’t take bus but walk with GPS. The way is just incredible with village, other shrines so quiet and monkey looking at you from the forest behind rice fields…

Otsu, located near Kyoto, is another treasure place in Japan. Faced to Biwa lake it has many historical monument and cultural hotspots. In summer the big firework event is so famous to attract many people. In Biwako Hall many world class concerts and plays are performed. Local fishes and sakes are another charm for visitors. Once you come here you cannot help missing this unforgettable city.

Ishiyama-dera Temple is definitely worth a visit. At the entrance, I had a hard time deciding which set ticket to buy. I ended up buying one that allowed me inside the hall, and it's a great way to see some very ancient things up close, so it's a good choice for those interested. The grounds are spacious, and I enjoyed a stroll through the undulating grounds. I was soothed by the beautiful greenery and the sounds of wild birds. I imagine it must be incredibly beautiful in the fall. As the temple is associated with Murasaki Shikibu, there was a "Murasaki Shikibu Room." They're currently showing a taiga drama, so a taiga drama museum was also open. I stayed overnight in Otsu, and the next day, I crossed the Omi Ohashi Bridge and drove along the lakeside toward Omihachiman, which was an exhilarating experience.

Very nice capsule, comfortable and with a TV. They have everything you need from toothbrush to facial cleanser. It is right on top of the station, so no luggage carrying around town. This was the cheapest hostel I stayed in all Japan so far with the most free items.
Got a free drink voucher for not wanting my capsule cleaned during my two night stay.

Good location near to Lake Biwa. Suitable for budget travellers who do not wish to splurge on a stay overlooking the lake as this hotel is just beside JR Seta station which is convenient for travelling to places of interests at the lake. The hotel room was very clean. Breakfast was sufficient.

Don’t hesitate to book this place if you’re going to Otsu. The hotel is beautifully designed - bringing out historic features with modern touches. The free walking tour (in English) was so, so interesting. We didn’t book the breakfast but the welcome treat was delicious!
