There is a vibe about Sendai that is youthful and exuberant.
There is a vibe about Sendai that is youthful and exuberant. It has a lot to offer and is a relaxed city.
There is a good music scene here, pretty varied from my limited exploration. A lot of pop / idol-type of things are going on, which is quite interesting. Hanging around, chilling out, meeting friends on the raised walkways by the front of the station seems to be the thing to do of an early evening for young Japanese people, and as such has an easy-going vibe. Indeed, there are occasional pop-up performances from groups which adds a nice sound to the evening.
If you like a good walk, why not stroll on up to the ruins of Sendai castle, which is on a hill just outside the main city area. It is the perfect distance for a good bit of exercise, but won't leave you exhausted. The view from the castle grounds is delightful, but don't expect much castle!

Sendai is a great place to base yourself when exploring Tohoku. It is a day trip away from amazing places like Mt.Zao, Yamadera, and Matsushima. The city itself is also beautiful with lots of greenery just outside of the city core and plenty of amazing places to eat. The people of Sendia are, in general, much more friendly than Tokyo and more happy to talk story with you over a beer or some food. Getting to Sendai is surprisingly fast from Tokyo, only taking 1.5 hours on the Hayabusa Shinkansen, and it cost less than I was expecting as well.

I sadly only got to visit around the station area both alone, with a friend and some locals and it was the highlight of my trip. The huge shopping area starting from the station extends for many blocs and has everything you could ever want from arcades to second hand shops to all sorts of restaurants and cafes. The malls next to the station have all your sort of branded shops like Gundam Base and Pokemon Center.
The nightlife is pretty nice and the few places we hit while wandering with a friend from Sendai were very tasty and everyone's super friendly!

(1) Great hotel with close proximity to Sendai Station. (2) Staffs are very friendly, although made a little error in breakfast choice, but hotel did make correction immediately. (3) Public bath is very good, although the floor is a little slippery where guests may fall if walking fast.

I have to say the view nearby from Matsushima is simply amazing (~30 min by train from Sendai station)! I also very much enjoyed the walk through the mausoleum grounds, but the rest is very much "just a city", and I didn't find anything else that was particularly interesting for me. The local specialty of beef tongue is nice, but quite pricey for what it is (it should be noted I'm mainly vegetarian, so meat-lovers might feel differently!).

We enjoyed our stay in Sendai.
We enjoyed our stay in Sendai. Hotel Monterey was very close to the station. It has an old world Praque theme which is a little outdated but very comfortable. We booked a corner room which was large, had writing desk, coffee and tea facilities and a large bath. The single room for our son however was a little spartan. The hotel breakfast was great and kicked started our day of exploring. We really enjoyed the onsen spa every evening. The temple was a wonderful experience and we enjoyed the day we spent at Matsushima Bay. Local train journey was easy and cheap as was the boat trip around the bay for 800 yen for an hour cruise. Exploring the island close by was delightful. Overall a very good few days in this area of Japan.

The room was comfortable and warm (which is important during winter season). I found everything I needed and even more - a good collection of skincare products was a great surprise! The breakfast is also very good, with local speciality foods and good coffee. The hotel is located not far from Sendai station, surrounded by shopping and food places, the bus stop is located right before the hotel entrance, so you can get to Sendai station in 5 min and to Sendai Daikannon in 25 min. Also thanks to the friendly and helpful staff!

Breakfast was really good, splendid selection and worth a try. The room is quite small but complete with the necessary amenities, overall a really good stay for solo traveller. It is also within walking distance from Sendai Station, and its right next to the morning market behind the hotel, which is good for some breakfast & sightseeing.
