Boasting an open-air hot spring bath looking out to the Kuju nature, Kuju Kogen Cottage offers cosy accommodation located in the beautiful plateau. It comes with a souvenir shop and karaoke... Service mind staff. Leg warmer table is great for breezy weather.
Located in just a minute's walk from JR Bungo-Taketa Station, Taketa Ekimae Hostel cue is a renovated wooden accommodation. A garden and terrace are offered for guests' interaction. The hostel is in a really nice traditional wooden house (renovated). The hosts were super welcoming and provided very useful hand-drawn map of the area with all possible tips. In the evening they run a bar where the guests are entitled for free welcome drink. Breakfast in the morning was freshly cooked and very sufficient; egg, toast, salad etc - nothing exotic but tasty, good for those who cannot see rice anymore. The place is very close to the railroad station (which doesn't in any way affect the quietness) and in the short walking distance from a very good onsen - don't forget to get a discounted ticket from the hostel reception!
Situated in the magnificent Aso Kuju National Park, Resonate Club Kuju boasts its 14.5-hectare property and offers roomy accommodations, free Wi-Fi access at public areas and a free shuttle service... Excellent breakfast and dinner. Their french style dinner is the best western meal i tried in Japan. Spacious room, very clean, very nice view and superb public bath.
Minshuku Shiroyama offers accommodation in Taketa. Free private parking is available on site. JR Bungo-Taketa Station is a 40-minute drive away. Shiroyama is deep in the countryside. It's unpretentious and comfortable, the rooms are old-fashioned in a very good way, the bath is very, very good. Our host was very attentive and helpful, and breakfast was delicious.
Lodge Kiyokawa has river views, free WiFi and free private parking, set in Bungoono. For added convenience, the property can provide towels and bed linen for an extra charge. The treehouses are so cool and very comfortable to stay in with air con, shoe storage and hammock. But best thing about this place are the river tent saunas!! Amazing to relax in a sauna and swim in the river after a long day. They also have a big kitchen, washing machine etc. BBQ looked good too, but we didn’t try it.
Featuring garden views, Ginga no Yado Kinoko2seigo in Shimo-tajiri features accommodation, a shared lounge and a garden. Stayed for only one night amidst our mountain journey thru Kuju/Aso. The place is a privately run by a couple, has a few twin/triple rooms as well as suite/maisonette, all with separate entrances. The price looked a bit high at a glance, the stay however came with half-board and yakiniku dinner there was exceptional. The room is spacious enough, can easily fit 3 guests, and boats wooden decor. The shower is separated from toilet/washroom (beware the window that may add up to the cold winters). They also have a small onsen on the site as well as telescope-equipped small observatory(!) where the owner tours the guests at request, a chance that I missed. Overall, it was a very unique experience deep in the mountains, and we truly liked it.
