The hotel was located across from castle and lovely gardens. We had great view from room. However was not best location as far as transport, lack of English at hotel was frustrating. Room was small but doable.
The railway station staff were, as in all Japanese stations, extremely helpful. We arrived in Wakayama mid-afternoon, checked into the hotel, then headed for the Wakayama Castle. It was an easy walk from the hotel, and a chance to stretch our legs.(1.5 kms from the JR station). From the castle, we enjoyed of the bay in the late afternoon sunlight, beautiful cherry blossoms and a quiet, not-too-busy significant cultural feature. While walking back to our hotel, we began chatting with a delightful young woman who was curious about our travels, and keen to tell us about her English classes. We're now friends by correspondence. It's been these unexpected encounters that have really added to our many very happy memories of Japan. We ate in a Japanese version of "Sophia's Pizza", a Japanese/Italian restaurant. While not expecting anything much, I must say that I really enjoyed the squid-ink spaghetti served with excellent spinach and just enough squid.
For lover of cats and heartwarming story, a trip to Kishi Station to see Nitama and the shrine of Tama is a worthwhile experience. Wakayama Castle visit was pleasant especially when it is not crowded. Kuroshio Ichiba Market is a nice decent place for fresh seafood and BBQ lunch. Another advantage of Wakayama is its proximity to Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto & Nara where hotel rates are much higher.
This isn’t in the city of Wakayama, it is actually outside the city requiring three different trains to get there. We had to start at osaka to get to Wakayama station, then Wakayama-Shi, then insonore (forgot how it’s spelled) station. Easy to find from station. Everyone seemed to surf. Total beach town. A cafe. There’s no convenience store or anything else, but very relaxing and authentic. GO! It is worth the adventure and the people are so kind.
It's a quaint and quiet little town by the sea, with some beautiful views of the sunset. However, there really isn't much to do. Shops and attractions close early, taxis are few and far between, it feels like a regular province town.
I really like Wakayama because it is quieter city than others city. Transportation is good. That made traveling in the city have more easier and convenient. People are very nice. It was very sad that I had only short stayed in Wakayama.
