For first time visitors of Phnom Penh, especially if you are arriving from Europe or North America, you'll need a few days just to get over jet-lag, then a couple of days at most for "sightseeing." The main things are the National Palace, the National Museum, S-21 Torture Center and the Killing Fields. All this can be done in one long day if necessary. This is not to say there's nothing else, but these are the main things. If you are new to Asia, then there might be a lot of "new and exotic" things to see. But if this isn't your first rodeo, then going to yet another "Asian food market" or "Central market" is the same thing you would see anywhere else in Asia. And there are two types of weather in Cambodia: brutally hot (100˚F/34˚C) brutally humid and not-rainy, and brutally hot (100˚F/34˚C) brutally humid and rainy. The latter part of the year is going to be a lot less "fun" than the former. Phnom Penh is a dirty, dusty, noisy town, looking like most any other SE Asian town, so choose your season and length of time carefully. Most people make Siem Reap/Angkor Wat a short side trip from Phnom Penh. When the big new international Chinese built and owned Siem Reap airport opens, I suggest making Phnom Penh a short side trip from Siem Reap/Angkor Wat. There are hundreds of temples to see in Siem Reap, and as a town, Siem Reap is more compact, cleaner, cooler and has a pretty happening downtown scene that is very accessible. And it's a bit cooler (both in hipness and temperature.) If we went back to Cambodia again, we'd just make a beeline for Siem Reap. Sorry Phnom Penh, just telling it like I see it.
The hotel is close by a night market and many more local restuaurants. Taxis and Tuk-Tuks were always available. Strolling around in the vicinity, we discovered excellent small cafés and independently run restaurants. In the posh areas, you will discover fine dining and stylish hang-outs. A disappointment was the Olympia Mall (nearby) as there were many too shops out of business. The buffet-staff was outstanding with their attention and politeness. The team at the frontdesk always good-humored and helpful with directions. With the cleaning staff, comunication was ever so difficult language-wise.
Phnom Penh striked me as a crowded place, not really adjusted for pedestrians. It has it's handful of sights and historical places, but I think two days is enough to see them all. I would recommend Wat Phnom and Royal Palace. National Museum is also good, but it's pretty small, especially when you already visited Angkor National Museum in Siem Reap. Everything else is skippable I would say. Also it's hard to find a good grociery store there.
Phnom Penh is such a great city. Compared to other capitals in SE Asia we have travelled to, this one is clean and charming. You can cross the road as a pedestrian without taking your life in your hands which surely must be a bonus!
Phnom Penh and Cambodia is a beautiful place in general. Phnom Penh main attractions tend to be those associated with the Khmer Rouge regime which can be hard, but they are vital for history. The roads are busy so be careful but it means it's easy to pick up a tuktuk and get around. Plenty of Western bars, restaurants and cafes if that's your thing. Also plenty of Khmer restaurants if you want to try the local dishes. Overall, I probably prefer Siem Reap as the roads are a little quieter but I will definitely still be back in Phnom Penh someday too as the both seem to come hand-in-hand.
I didn't expect to find that Phnom Penh has clean streets and there are fewer bikes than in Ho Chi Minh City. The city has an amazing embankment and many beautiful sightseeing views. Definitely, I recommend staying longer in Phnom Penh if you're planning to visit Angkor Wat.
The Pavilon hotel grounds are fantastic tropical environment which are maintained to the highest standards. The Pavilon, even though in the middle of Phnom Penh is so quiet, easily excessable to the city of Phnom Penh. The menu was limited, which I believed was because of limited numbers of guests due to covid was very appealing when you also take into account that you have a spectacular Asian city just outside the hotels front door. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel and look forward to staying there on my future trips to Phnom Penh.
Gorgeous new hotel in a really great location in Phnom Penh. Super nice facilities. Very comfortable, spacious, bright and clean room. Great breakfast in a gorgeous room with sweeping views of the city. Amazing pool with tons of shade. Great location for walking around town or easy tuktuks to landmarks and sightseeing. Really kind and helpful front desk staff. Would highly recommend it for your visit to Phnom Penh.
I highly recommend this hotel if you are planning to stay in Phnom Penh. The location is great since it is close to the royal palace, the riverside walk, the night market and there is a lot of restaurants and bar close to it. The room is spacious and super clean. The staffs are very helpful, friendly and they are always with a smile.
The staff is excellent and the location is superb, rooms are neat and clean and hygienic It is convenient to reach Royal Palace of Cambodia, Night market, Beautiful view of Riverside. Best of all is the Taste of Indian very delicious food which I would love to have it here... I recommend this.
Daun Penh, Phnom Penh
Depressing A shabby, dark & dingy place. Only good things - location , WiFi works ok Most hotels on the riverside are similarly nasty. Cambodia is nice but downtown PP is now a dump. Avoid
Boutique styling was marvellous and really made you feel that you were in Cambodia and not in a standard blah hotel. Big room, lovely rooftop pool and bar restaurant serving good well priced food.
location is excellent. New and one of the best hotels I ever stayed in Cambodia.
