FAQs about hotels in Phnom Penh

Cambodia's Colorful Capital

Cambodia has successfully dusted itself off from the ravages of war with its colourful capital of Phnom Penh rising from the ashes and sparkling once more. This fascinating city, on the banks of the Mekong River, features exotic markets, cultural jewels and is home to some of the friendliest people on earth.

A visit to the National Museum captures a slice of Cambodia’s ancient Khmer history and art. A different and more recent history suffocates and overwhelms visitors to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, the former prison of the Khmer Rouge, and The Killing Fields are a short drive from the capital.

The Royal Palace is a striking centrepiece in the centre of Phnom Penh, and is home to the Emerald Buddha and Silver Pagoda. Not far away is the Cambodian Independence Monument that celebrates Cambodia’s sovereignty.

You can satisfy your hunger pains with delicious French-Indochina-inspired meals at various street stalls or classy restaurants. The riverside area has the Art Deco Central Market for a great bargain and there are a variety of bars, especially near Sisowath Quay.

Take time to walk around the French colonial streets with its mix of slow-moving monks and speedy motorbikes. Booking.com has many hotels located in Daun Penh and Chamkar Mon districts, amongst others.

This is a busy city with fantastic landmarks, that whilst disturbing must be visited. It has both the excitement of a modern city with boat trips, rooftop bars and great restaurants with the ability of understanding the culture, history and development of Cambodia.

Compared to a metropolis like Bangkok, Phnom Penh feels more...

Compared to a metropolis like Bangkok, Phnom Penh feels more like a village. There is hardly any public transport structure, but there is an extensive, inexpensive TukTuk service, which should be used via various apps. If you book spontaneously on the street, the price can be very high. If the price is lower, I'll be happy to give you a good tip. For gay visitors, Phnom Penh is a bit difficult as there is no central scene. So you have to book a trip with the TukTuk to the respective places. Basaac Lane and Basaac Street are exciting nightlife districts. But you have to discover it first. From the bar to the restaurant, clubs, ice cream parlor there is everything. The prices are fair. Phnom Penh is hot and a challenge for people with walking difficulties. Some caution is advised in the food stalls and restaurants. Find a place you trust.

    There’s lots to see.

There’s lots to see. Unfortunately a lot of it covers a bad period for the country. The prison S21 is certainly worth a visit. There are plenty of temples to visit. It’s a country trying to recover and show visitors it has more to offer.

Phnom Penh was a great intro into Cambodia, however I think I probably stayed one day too long (I think 3 days would have been best). The history in the city is so varied and it has a great vibrant atmosphere that is infectious! Although difficult, I would recommend going to the genocide museum and killing fields. I would then go to the palace and national museum to see another side of the country’s history. Kravanh restaurant is a must try (more expensive than most places in the city) purely because the ancient recipes of the country were shared by the Queen to the head chef - the food is exquisite and allows for a more authentic take on the recipes.

Unfortunately, my experience in Phnom Penh was disappointing...

Unfortunately, my experience in Phnom Penh was disappointing. The city felt chaotic, with relentless traffic and few pedestrian-friendly areas, making it hard to explore comfortably. Getting around was challenging, as most tuk-tuk drivers insisted on high prices and often quoted fares in U.S. dollars rather than the local currency, which felt like a constant negotiation and added to the expenses. In fact, many places, from shops to restaurants, seemed to prefer USD, and I rarely got a fair exchange rate, which made even basic transactions feel costly. Cleanliness was another issue—areas around the markets and some public spaces were untidy, with noticeable litter on the streets that detracted from the city’s appeal. The attractions, like the Royal Palace and Wat Phnom, were interesting but didn’t meet my expectations in terms of upkeep, and they were crowded, making it hard to fully appreciate them. Additionally, I didn’t feel very welcomed as a tourist. Some locals seemed indifferent or even unfriendly, and safety became a concern, especially in the evenings on dimly lit streets. Although I managed to find a few highlights, Phnom Penh ultimately didn’t provide the warmth or excitement I’d hoped for. It may be better suited for travellers comfortable with a very rustic, raw experience, but sadly, it wasn’t for me.

    The whole experience was good.

The whole experience was good. It was safe and the people were very friendly. But what really makes Phonm Penh a great travel destination is the price of food and hotel. I found the price very reasonable - very affordable. The city has good attractions for tourists, but I’d say 3 days is good enough to see all.

We stayed overnight here because of its convenient location to the airport. We had free transfer from and back to the airport, making life easy for a family of four. The hotel was amazing - with a well-equipped gym, stunning pool, and the best breakfast we experienced in Cambodia with an incredible array of food. My teenagers rated the breakfast and gym 10 out of 10. The rooms were very comfortable. I only wished we stayed more than one night. And a special shout out to Kakada who made our farewell from Cambodia so special. A true gentleman.

This hotel complex is perfect for stays in the city centre if you’re “glam backpacking”. Has everything you need, including the very helpful free laundromat! The pool and gym are fab and usually not at all busy. Beautiful rooms and lovely views of the city . Great breakfast too, standard variety of western and Asian meals. The standout feature was the staff. They could not do enough for us and we’re probably the best hotel staff we’ve had during our stay. So helpful and always on hand to help.

Location is simply great, view from the balcony is great, staff were very nice and helpful, restaurant and bar is still under renovation, but I bet it would be a great place to dine. An infinity pool with a view on the best sites of phnom pehn. Very comfortable beds and pillows. TV is huge with Netflix.
