Matara isn't a big town so it is relatively quick to get from A to B. The beach is beautiful. But there aren't that many restaurants in in the town. The Matara Rest House near the fort had good food and drinks and is one of the most worth it dining options nearby. Lemon is also a good option. There are restaurants closer to the touristy spots but those are on the pricier side. snorkeling with turtles is popular in Matara.

Matara, was a good place for me.I stayed at La Polena,for 12 nights.The breakfast was excellent and the lady that made it changed the sheets and cleaned my room twice.I do think that they could give visitors a bottle of water daily.Also a jug to make a cup of tea in each room.Very little money is spend on maintaining the place.Also a sign with numbers for hiring Tuk-Tuk drivers would help.The manager is nice ,but a little slow in offering advice. Island rsetuarant past the Doctors had teh best food.I also needed more veg.So bought carrots,tomatoes and cucumber for myself.Also egg,roll in town. Restaurants at the beach are a rip off.10% added for tax.This is nonsense.Tuk driver from the Railway station to hotel.600 rup The one Hotel to Trainstation 800

Matara is a beautiful coastal town in southern Sri Lanka, full of charm and local culture. The beaches are clean and peaceful—perfect for swimming, surfing, or just relaxing. I enjoyed exploring the historic Matara Fort and visiting nearby places like Polhena Beach and Parey Dewa Temple. The local food is delicious, and the people are warm and welcoming. It's a great place to experience authentic southern Sri Lankan life with a mix of nature, history, and the sea.

If you are looking for a tourist only beach, this isn't it. Mostly locals and that's why it was so lovely. Very small beach with no waves. A dead reef but some fish and turtles.
Local people there were really kind. Which is what made this place special.
The area itself was a bit of a tourist trap but the beach was actually was a small and cute meeting point.

Matare is part of a chain of cities along the southernmost coast of Sri Lanka. It has beaches for expert surfers as well as beginners and those who just want to be by the beach. The beaches along the coast are all sparkling translucent and enticing. Find hotels along the shore because the traffic on the roads is dense and sometimes unpleasant to westerners the beaches and the kindness of the population more than make up for it.

Nice place, but you have to make an effort to explore, which is nice. Not the commercial fully packaged commercial tourist deal. Good quirky options.
Has quite a lot of Sri Lanka's history, forts, but courts, and old paved streets, as I said, a great if you make a little effort to explore.
The Duchman's Street is a great beachside restaurant!

A fantastic place to stay in the heart of Madiha! The hotel is new, and the rooms are fresh and beautifully designed. It’s run by a wonderful family who are incredibly hospitable and make you feel right at home. The location is perfect—close to the beach with great surf, yet in a peaceful area. Madiha itself is a charming and relaxed surf town. Highly recommended!

Beachfront hotel with two small private beaches with sunbeds. Beautiful garden with palm trees where they serve breakfast. In the back yard there is a nice pool area with good size pool. From Polhena beach it is 10 minutes walk distance. Very polite and useful staff. Good breakfast.
