Steve and his family's warm hospitality and presence was the good thing there, otherwise I wouldn't have stayed at this place. This place may be good for bag packers but surely not close to perfect holiday stay for a family.

Everything about the property was above expectations. It is an apartment so we did not expect a restaurant although many were nearby so this is not a problem at all. We had the whole second floor to ourselves, it was spacious and spotless. Host Noel lives above and makes sure to address all questions and concerns promptly. A truly wonderful Mauritius experience. I would highly recommend this.

    The town offers a more authentically local atmosphere than...

    The town offers a more authentically local atmosphere than beach resorts, although admittedly there is no beach on this part of the Mauritian coast, so the area attracts a different kind of traveller. It is a rather run-down place but has considerable charm. The waterfront is a lovely (if windy) area to stroll around and the town has some interesting historical attractions - also a few kilometres away, in Vieux Grand Port, the site of the first landing on the island (by the Dutch, in 1598). One matter to be aware of concerns going out for dinner in the town. There are plenty of restaurants in the central area, many of them very welcoming and with very good food, however: - the streets are very poorly lit after dark, resulting in considerable stretches where a torch/phone light is useful; - most streets have no pavements, or very uneven/poor quality pavements where they do exist, so you have to walk in the road - watch your step and beware traffic that rushes past, often very suddenly (however, the local drivers are good at swerving to avoid pedestrians)! - unnervingly, there are large numbers of dogs roaming around on the streets - this seems to be the case all over Mauritius, even in the capital, albeit to a lesser extent. By day they are very placid and tend to shy away from people, but after dark they are often uncomfortably territorial and can be aggressive.

    Mahébourg has a beautiful waterfront.

    Mahébourg has a beautiful waterfront. I prefer the modern part of the city versus the downtown area which has narrower streets. Historical Mahébourg Museum is worth visiting. Don’t forget the delicious Biscuits Manioc!

    A lovely, underrated town in the less touristy South.

    A lovely, underrated town in the less touristy South. We only spent one day there, basically to shorten the trip to the airport the next morning, but we discovered several little gems. My one complaint - it could do with some live sega music. We will definitely spend a few more days there on our next trip.

    The city is not beautiful.

    The city is not beautiful. It is good for accomodation and making trips from the base. There is no nice bar where to go for a drink during evening. There are some good restaurants and nice market. I would recommend to stay in Blue Bay if you can find affordable accomodation there.

    Mahebourg is the downtown of Mauritius, do not stay there unless you wanna sleep for a night so you can be closer to the airport because it is closer to the airport, otherwise the north side is the best for accommodation.

    Mahebourg is not at all touristy.

    Mahebourg is not at all touristy. You get A true taste of island life. The eateries are mainly visited by locals with the odd tourist. They're cheap & always delicious. I must recommend Chez Marilyn. Blue Bay is a short drive from town & well worth a visit! We stayed for 7 nights which was a few days too long, maybe 4 or 5 nights is enough.

    Rooms were spacious, we booked a sea view room which was on ground level, so not really sea view, however it was great because we could sit outside our room & have access to bar for drinks etc. Also at the last minute we requested an extension for the day only & although we could not stay in our room they provided another room. Staff at reception were marvellous went out of way to assist us. Very impressed by hotel security at gate & front of resort, friendly while also being diligent.

    Our flights changed and we had to find somewhere at the last minute, glad we were able to book and at to hotel so quickly. All the taxi drivers knew location, told us very popular transit hotel. Owner was very helpful, location was great was able to walk to beach and local market, very quiet residential area. No card payment - need to pay in cash, with local currency.

    The view is amazing, super close to the airport and the room is nice, clean and comfortable, the breakfast is amazing, with local food and great variety (just missed some protein options, but I guess that's how they eat). The village Mahebourg is a great start of the trip, you will get to know more about the island in a very authentic way!
