Ajijic was very nice, especially as it was the off-season.
Ajijic was very nice, especially as it was the off-season. I enjoyed the town. I would have liked it better if there were not so many expats. I wanted more of an opportunity for speaking Spanish, but I kept running into people who could not speak Spanish or did not want to speak Spanish. For Spanish, I had to take a bus to go to Chapala. I was later told that 70% of the population of Ajijic is expats and that Chapala was about 5% expats. (This was told to me by an expat couple and verified by others, including people who were non-English-speaking.) Ajijic was still very nice and I enjoyed walking around it. Ajijic is a lovely town with very friendly people. It is not your typical vacation spot and it's not touristy. I was there because I had read it was a great place to live if you were thinking of relocating. While I enjoyed the town and the delicious restaurants and the friendly people, if you have any physical limitations this is not the place for you. The roads are made of rocks, big ones down to little ones which means walking is treacherous. The sidewalks are too narrow for 2 people to walk side by side and they have their problems as well as they are not constructed to be level but dip at several places. Leave your heels at home ladies. Mosquitos are a problem because Ajijic is on Lake Chapala. Bring your bug spray. All said and done my husband, and I enjoyed our stay there. The town is very quaint with numerous typically Mexican shops, restaurants and artesanias (handcraft). The Tuesday and Wednesday markets were wonderful and we found the Mexican people generally very friendly and helpful. This was our second visit to Ajijic and we would certainly recommend it as a first choice for anyone wanting to experience village life not too far from Guadalajara.Guest review byBuhrmannMexico - 10.0

We were visiting friends who recently moved to Ajijic from the USA. It’s a very lovely quiet town. Lot’s of ex-pats there is a huge ex-pat facility with tons of activities and information to make the transition fairly smooth. We found it a bit too quiet. The lake is beautiful but unfortunately it is not swimmable. But I could imagine kayaking or paddle boarding would be great. Very few boats. Beautiful Malecón with a number of restaurants overlooking the lake. We felt very safe. Super convenient with large grocery stores and everything else you might need. Easy walkable and driving. This town is on Lake Chapala and has been a bit of an artist's colony since the 1950's. Quiet and charming, as a retirement age woman I always felt safe even at night. There seems to be a respect here for everyone. And beauty even in the sidewalks. Sidewalks: the streets are paved with cobblestones that might be difficult for folks with mobility issues. I visited over Thanksgiving weekend, which coincided with the Festival of Saint Andrew, which was both wonderful (I love church bells! and processions) and a challenge (firecrackers).Guest review byJanisUnited States

It is a beautiful hacienda style building over a large area - very traditional. The breakfast was either a buffet some days, or made to order others (unclear why different on different days). The buffet was decent, but the made to order breakfast was fantastic. There is a good sized pool and extensive grounds to relax and sunbathe. The room was absolutely huge!
