FAQs about hotels in Kota Kinabalu

Tropical Paradise in East Malaysia

Kota Kinabalu (KK) is the capital of the East Malaysian state of Sabah on the island of Borneo. It features white-sand beaches, tropical rainforests and the outer lying coral reefs and islands of the Tunku Abdul Rahman (TAR) Marine Park, a haven for scuba divers.

Occupied by the Japanese and heavily bombed during World War II by the British, some remnants of this colonial era remain in the Atkinson Clock Tower and Signal Hill Observatory, with its sweeping view of the coast.

Tanjung Arn is KK’s most popular public beach and secluded northern beaches like Karambunai and Dalit have resorts dotted along the coast.

Kota Kinabalu Harbour hosts international cruise ships and the KK Waterfront is a popular place with many bars. The KK Handicraft Market is your chance to grab a nice souvenir to take home.

Mount Kinabalu is Malaysia’s highest mountain at 4,101 metres. This highly important ecological region contains rare fauna and flora and makes a good day trip from the capital.

A variety of hotels on Booking.com are centred around Kota Kinabalu International Airport, the city centre and islands.

For a town of 500,000 people there should be many more waterfront restaurants available to tourists and local population. National Museum was closed, the observation tower was closed and the Cultural village did not look genuine (plastic flowers used all over the village!?). I would recommend a max. stay of 2 days + 1 day for islands visit.

This was my first time in Kota Kinabalu.

This was my first time in Kota Kinabalu. I came for a program, but since I arrived earlier, I decided to explore KK and Kundasang. Even though it was a last-minute booking with Wisata Travel Agency, the accommodation and guide they arranged were excellent. ✨ Favourite places: In KK, I enjoyed the city vibes and food around 1Borneo Mall. In Kundasang, the highlights were the fish spa, rabbit farm, Desa Dairy Farm, and of course a stop at Pekan Nabalu — a picturesque spot with breathtaking views of Mount Kinabalu and local stalls selling souvenirs and snacks. 🍴 Where I ate: One memorable stop was trying the famous kepak ayam madu Wak Ali — really delicious! Around KK, it was easy to find food because there are so many choices, from local eateries to restaurants. 🚗 Getting around KK: With a guide from the travel agency, it was very convenient. The city is easy to move around with transport arranged, and going up to Kundasang was smooth with their service. 💑 For young couples: I’d recommend Kundasang as a must — the dairy farm, the mountain views, Pekan Nabalu, and even simple stops like the fish spa and rabbit farm create great memories. KK city itself is lively with shopping, cafes, and seaside views. It’s a good mix of nature and city for couples. Overall, it was a short but meaningful trip, and I’ll remember it as one of the best last-minute adventures I’ve had.

Kota Kinabalu is truly a little gem to discover.

Kota Kinabalu is truly a little gem to discover. The Sabahan people are so warm and welcoming, which makes exploring the city and its surroundings even more special. There’s an incredible variety of things to do: from jungle walks and nature-based activities to relaxing on paradise-like beaches. Whether you’re looking for adventure or just a peaceful escape, Kota Kinabalu has a bit of everything and is definitely worth visiting.

Kota Kinabalu is the most cosmopolitan of the cities in Sarawak and Sabah. Shopping is good, plenty of eateries and the inner city is walkable . The traffic like in all Malaysian cities is horrific. I want to point out that taxies in Malaysia don't have meters any more and charge for transport whatever the want (always to much) compared to Grab/Uber.

    I love Kota Kinabalu.

I love Kota Kinabalu. There are a lot of nice restaurants, and there are some beautiful islands you can get to. I also love the local restaurants and the dessert places like the Royal Coconut. I would definitely go back again.
