We had a 5 day break in Amsterdam which was about adequate to visit the main sights. The Van Gogh museum was a must, well laid out but some of the famous works are in other galleries overseas. The Rijksmuseum was vast, with many familiar works. We spent 5 hours there and didn’t see it all. We began our visit with a canal cruise which helped get an overall view of the city and its attractions. Travellers need to watch out for cyclists when crossing roads. The tram system allows easy travel within the city. However, Amsterdam is very flat so easy to explore on foot. Our favorite city to visit in Europe. Amsterdam just has its own feel: intriguing history, beautiful architecture and wonderful people. Exceptional public transportation system that is both efficient and affordable. For adventures outside of the city consider the Zaanse Schans windmill village to the north, or the mid-sized city Haarlem to the west - both less than 30 minutes from Centraal Station. The public transport is excellent.
The public transport is excellent. Trams run every 10 mins and the buses every 30 mins. Do get the I Amsterdam card online before you travel, it is well worth it. Easy to use on public transport and it also gets you in to some places of interest and some selected boat cruises without having to worry about carrying cash. You just simply state how long you want it to be valid for when you order it online and then pay the appropriate price. There is a list of places where you can use your card online. Anne Frank House and the Tower are both amazing places to visit. The tower has a swing at the top if you are brave enough to view the city from such a great height!
