Tucked away near the German border in the north-eastern corner of the Netherlands, Groningen uses its isolated position to forge its own distinct character. The young student population attending the 17th-century University of Groningen complements the historic architecture and famous Dutch canals.
The skyline is dominated by the magnificent Martinitoren (Martini Tower) that overlooks the Grote Markt (Main Square). Many buildings showcase Groningen’s merchant history and the centre features regular food markets such as the Vismarkt and Grote Markt.
Groninger Museum has one of the finest modern art exhibitions in Northern Europe and Oosterpoort plays host to cultural events from around the world. Students play a role in defining modern Groningen, giving this city a reputation for a vibrant nightlife.

Charming , vibrant old city for walking tours, biking, and street cafes. Loved the canals and various bridges. Enjoyed the pancake ship. Excellent bus and train transportation. Many places accept Visa cards but some use debit cards only.
I went to Groningen especially to visit the Forum building. It did not disappoint. An extraordinary design it is composed of all facilities to enhance your stay. Cinemas, library, great information, vg tourist information and shop, excellent cafe (indoors and out). Great walk up the Martini Church Tower in tiny spiral staircase made entirely from bricks to different levels. One showing off the huge bells and another higher provided a terrific lookout to view the city. I did not get to the top. Walked the tour of the former alms houses which took me all over the city including the park. The university and the mass of parked bikes was a good photo op. Everywhere there are great cafes and the canals have good bars for evening sitting out.
Nice and cosy traditional Dutch city, very friendly and safe, even in the night. Lots of students and parties going on. Lots of places to eat and a bit less expensive than the major Dutch cities. Easy and safe to get around.
Very nice city - good vibe, lot of cyclists, ‘slow pace’, very atmospheric. The Forum building (and its rooftop) are a must - this is what libraries should like today. Multifunctional, a place to work, read, have a nice coffee… And exceptional architecture. The rooftop provides great views over the city and surrounding area.
I fell in love with this city! I was blown away by The Forum! We went back a second time to see more. If we'd had time, I would've liked to go back at night to see the stars and the city at night, particularly the Martini Tourin. I think it's beautiful! And so are the other churches. We ate at pubs and like to have desserts in different places than dinner so we can walk a bit in between, so we had desserts in lots of different types of places. Sometimes at fancy restaurants, and sometimes at bakeries we could find still open, once we had dessert on a rooftop terrace. We walked almost everywhere in Groningen, but driving was easy. I think the next time we will go in the early fall and hope for less wind and rain. It was quite cold and windy for April.
The hotel was pretty good, it is more beautiful that the pictures, the only things is the check in is by call, No one greeted me at the entrance, everything was done over the phone, one person gave me the instructions. but I recommend, is near the centrum.
