Oirschot
B&B Het Pronkbed in Oirschot has 3-star accommodations with free parking. Among the various facilities are a garden, a terrace, as well as a shared lounge. Free WiFi is included. The house and decorations welcome you to rest and slow down from the hectic day to day life. That was the intended purpose of the weekend getaway for me. The place was sparkling clean, the bed was very comfortable and the room was equipped with everything you might need to enjoy the stay. Whatever you did not find in there, you could request from the host, Marianne, who is a delightful person ready to guide and assist you in anything you request. The breakfast was one of the best I had away from home, with local produce and home-made jams, freshly backed breads and good coffee.

Oirschot is a very tidy town, very middle-class and a good advert for life in the Netherlands. The countryside is very close, there seem to be no social problems, there is good access to facilities and good day-to-day shopping and it is easy to get about on foot (or bicycle). On the flip-side, it is not a cheap place to live, but you get what you pay for. I visit Oirschot twice a year for events at De Enck.
The literature calls it a village, but it's really a fair-sized town and has plenty of shops (and a concert hall - De Enck - my reason for visiting). Even so, it's not so big that one cannot walk from the edge to centre easily. Visiting from hectic England, this is a very civilized place - it feels safe. Clearly a middle-class paradise, reflected in a good variety of local businesses and no discernible crime. The roads are naturally calm because of the (typically Dutch) preponderance of cyclists - more cycling means fewer cars on the road - but this is the benefit of being in a flat country.
This is a quiet respectable town that is eaaily walked (or cycled). I have seen many visitors who come here in order to be able to walk around the countryside. One gets the feeling that crime is something that happens elsewhere - it must be a great place to live (but at a price) and it comes with a bit of culture shock for an Englishman conditioned to the frailties of human nature. In the centre of this quiet little town is a relatively metropolitan entertainment venue - the Rabobank Theatre - which accommodates the event that brings me to Oirschot. When I say 'metropolitan', I mean smart but expensive - an ordinary lager will cost you the equivalent of upwards of £5 a pint in the attached bar. The theatre itself seats aroind 500 people and the seats are comfortable. There are two decent supermarkets (Jumbo and Lidl), but also more old-fashioned shopping choices (there is a lovely - if expensive - fish shop, for instance, as well as local bakeries) - and the car parking is both free and plentiful. Out in the suburb where I stayed, there is a windmill right in the middle of a housing estate, now hosting a restaurant. Obviously the mill was there first and the town grew past it. This tells you how new much of the town is - most housing must be less than 40 years old.
