Gateway to the western fjords, Bergen is a picture-perfect postcard of Norway at its best. Colorful, wooden houses in UNESCO World Heritage-listed Bryggen contrast wonderfully with the lush greenery of the surrounding Seven Mountains.
For fantastic views of Norway’s 2nd largest city, hop on the cable car to Ulriken Mountain. Alternatively, hike or take the funicular railway up to Fløyen Mountain. With beaches sheltered from the North Sea by islands, Bergen is Norway’s busiest port and a popular starting point for fjord cruises and deep sea fishing.
The fish market in the narrow streets of the historic centre is a popular attraction, while just north is 12th-century St Mary’s Church. Around 1,000 years younger is Bergenhus, one of Norway’s best-preserved forts. Further north is Gamle Bergen, a reconstructed wooden village offering insight into the past.
Cobbled Strandgaten street and Lagunen Storsenter shopping center are just some shopping options, but items aren’t cheap. As you wander around the city look for work by Dolk, Norway’s best-known street artist. Other cultural attractions include many museums and a good music scene ranging from classic to indie.
Booking.com’s range of Bergen accommodation extends out towards Bergen Airport in Flesland, the departure point for many workers on the offshore oil and gas rigs.
Great city! Very walkable and excellent public transit. Great food and many things to see and do. Definitely do a Fjord cruise and take the tram to the top of the mountain. Or the cable car if you enjoy heights
What I liked most about Bergen is that the city is very easy to visit by foot, without having to take busses or a car. You can easily get to most attractions with a ten minute walk, and I also felt safe going around when it was dark outside. The city is very cute, and the colourful buildings are so nice to see! There are also plenty of cafés, restaurants and supermarkets that you can easily reach. The thing I didn't like is that it's extremely touristic: Bryggen (the oldest part of the city) doesn't have any traditional shop left, just souvenir shops. That made me feel a little bit out of place: I hoped to dive into the Norwegian culture but instead I found myself walking through almost identical shops with magnets and postcards. But having said that, there are also some cute gems to discover: for example, the KODE museums displays, among other things, paintings from romantic Norwegian painters. I didn't know them before and it was amazing to discover them. I think that two or three days are enough to visit the city, but if you have more time I suggest to get a good map and explore the trails on the mountains surrounding Bergen, for example the hike between mount Floyen and mount Ulriken: quite difficult (don't do it if you are a beginner or if you don't feel safe enough with your balance ability) but totally worth it!
The centre is compact. It’s picturesque in the centre with good bars and restaurants with lots of opportunities to travel further. A wander around Bryggen, a trip on the fernuncular and a fiord cruise sre well worth it.
We got lucky with the weather. Beautiful clear, blue skies. Lots of sunshine. Took a cab from airport hotel to city center. Four people was about $60 - $70 each way. It took about 20 minutes by cab with no traffic. Bus or light rail was available, but looked complicated for someone not familiar with the area. Would probably take longer on public transport. A cruise ship was in port, so the tourist areas were crowded. Had lunch at Me Fish. Probably a tourist trap, but the food was good. Don't order the shrimp. Not what you expect. Sushi was very good. Took the funicular to the outdoor dining area at summit. Great views of the city and surrounding area. Spent some time there enjoying drinks in the sun.
Lovely city on the coast. With a Fish Market that worth the visit (expensive but super tasty and fresh) and lots of small, lovely shops to admire Norwegian knitting models (and buy of course if you can). With a lovely Christmas shop in the Fish market proximity and lots of small places where to stop, take a picture and enjoy. Seemed to me vibrant, young and full of life.
You can visit this city - if you have absolutely nothing to do! and exclusively in summer! As the city is rainy and quickly becomes gray at the end of summer. The city is expensive, boring, there is no entertainment, it cannot satisfy the gastronomic needs of tourists. 80% of the buildings are old wooden houses of the same type. There is no architecture here. The mountains are not high. in general there is nothing more to say, if this is your first city with mountains, then you can come for a week, there will be enough time to walk around and take some kind of tour of Fords. There is no point in going to all the sights, they are much more beautiful in the photo than in life... and you will spend a lot of time and money. This is my review. The more you travel, the more you compare, the harder it is to be surprised.
Arna, Bergen
Amazing place, close to Bergen airport, very rustic design with unique touch of the owners’ relics and ideas, quite unusual feeling of being accommodated next door to a herd of sheep (no smell in the room, though), beautiful newly rebuilt shower facilities including a sauna, very friendly and helpful owner who greeted us and showed us around even though we arrived late. the only problem was we had to go on the morning after to make it for the rest of our Norway trip :) thank you!
Good location nearby Bergen and the airport. some noise from the street outside, but no airplanes to be heard. Making for a good night’s rest. Fantastic breakfast, one of the best from recent hotel visits. Cozy lobby with entertainment (pool/football/shuffle table). Good room with reasonable amount of space and a good layout. We booked ours for around 1200 sek including breakfast (non refundable) which we found excellent value for money. Would definitely rebook.
hotel was good, staff were really nice, unfortunately we got scammed by an extortionate taxi from the airport which slightly ruined an otherwise fantastic impression of Norway. Would suggest holding on to your hire car for an extra day and skipping the airport hotel/staying in Bergen, we thought staying near the airport would make travel home on an early flight less stressful but the taxis are so bad that was not the case!
Bergenhus, Bergen
Beautiful old house circa 1770 in a lovely part of Bergen…. Except when raining. (always)… right on bus stop !! Walkable to centre and easy bus Would really recommend to get out of hustle and bustle, supermarket 30m away, and fully equipped kitchen …. Very handy in Norway to be able to eat in !! Owners very approachable and helpful. One bus train ticket 40k to airport from near front door ! 6 aud 4 euro !!
Our choice of this hotel proved to be a wise one. The hotel locates in the center of the city and it is within walking distance to all attractions and destinations. It is the only hotel during our stay in Norway that offers kettle in the room. Furthermore, the 24-hour availability of hot + cold water and coffee at the reception area added a delightful touch of convenience to our stay.
Value for money is probably okay for Norway - this is the nicest hotel in this price category. The double-room ended up being a good size for one person. All sightseeing places are in walking distance. A lot of places to eat as well. Possibility to store luggage for free after checking out. Nice view from the room (the mountain). Clean and fresh bathroom.
The location of this hotel is just a short walk to the airport! We had a very early flight, so the location was amazing. The pizza we ordered to take back to our room after our long day of sight-seeing was delicious, the room was clean, quiet, and comfy. We wish we could have stayed longer as it was easily the best hotel of all that we stayed at!
This property is just in the Bergen central . if you are planning for the Norway in a nutshell trip and to start your train journey, then this is the pert hotel. 2 mins walk from the hotel you will find the train starting to Voss. The breakfast is pretty good!!
Nice hotel in a great location. This was our last stop on a tour of Sweden, Denmark and Norway and it was a solid place to finish. The hotel is minutes from the busy part of the harbor. They have a lively bar and eating area next to the lobby.
Clean beautiful hotel in walking distance to the Bergen Airport & the light rail to get downtown. Breakfast had many options! We did not hear a single plane & the curtains were very dark.
I would describe Hotel 13 as a boutique luxury hotel. The rooms were beautifully appointed and the baths luxurious. The breakfast had a wide variety for all tastes. The location was central.
Excellent breakfast and very good location. We could walk to the train station and Bergen ferries. Hotel restaurant in the stock exchange Hall was elegant and the food was very good.
Very cosy hotel, with a boutique feel about the rooms. the location is excellent within an easy stroll of central Bergen yet very quiet street and the staff were super friendly.
Het Hanseatic Hotel is absolutely in the perfect location for a visit to Bergen & Byrren! Beautiful hotel incorporating a historic site!
