Gateway to the western fjords, Bergen is a picture-perfect postcard of Norway at its best. Colorful, wooden houses in UNESCO World Heritage-listed Bryggen contrast wonderfully with the lush greenery of the surrounding Seven Mountains.
For fantastic views of Norway’s 2nd largest city, hop on the cable car to Ulriken Mountain. Alternatively, hike or take the funicular railway up to Fløyen Mountain. With beaches sheltered from the North Sea by islands, Bergen is Norway’s busiest port and a popular starting point for fjord cruises and deep sea fishing.
The fish market in the narrow streets of the historic centre is a popular attraction, while just north is 12th-century St Mary’s Church. Around 1,000 years younger is Bergenhus, one of Norway’s best-preserved forts. Further north is Gamle Bergen, a reconstructed wooden village offering insight into the past.
Cobbled Strandgaten street and Lagunen Storsenter shopping center are just some shopping options, but items aren’t cheap. As you wander around the city look for work by Dolk, Norway’s best-known street artist. Other cultural attractions include many museums and a good music scene ranging from classic to indie.
Booking.com’s range of Bergen accommodation extends out towards Bergen Airport in Flesland, the departure point for many workers on the offshore oil and gas rigs.

I love to travel to places where things work--even in the face of challenging weather! Bergen is set between mountains, and surrounded by spectacular fjords. The rains produce incredible waterfalls. The citizens of Bergen are industrious, their town clean, safe, and beautiful. They have invested in a great light rail system that reaches along what is really a linear city, from the harbor area to the airport. Despite the climate, many people are seen riding bikes and walking where they need to go. There are two spectacular mountain overlooks, one reached from the harbor, and the other by cable car.

We traveled to Bergen at the end of October, and in a period of especially wet weather, even for coastal Norway. Our planned trip to Myrdal, Flan, and Voss was cancelled because train service was interrupted by flooding and threats of landslide. It is a good idea to allow an extra day or two to allow for possible rescheduling. The fall weather can change rapidly, as on one day we had bright sunshine, a snowstorm on top of Mt. Ulriken, and rain. In this season, you should never go out without good rain gear.

Beautiful, old city, but would not recommend spending Sunday and Monday there if you have limited time. Most places were closed until Tuesday, so we missed a lot of museums that we would've liked to visit. The funicular had a great view and I think the hike would've been a great plan as well had the weather been a little warmer. The University Natural History Museum was also a great stop.

Bergen is a clean, vibrant city with excellent public transportation. The light rail system runs from the airport to the historic port area, and serves much of the city. The light rail trains are fast, although there are many stops, and runs are frequent. Bergen has a cog railway to a mountain-top near the harbor, and a newly rebuilt cable car to a higher mountain to another peak. Both offer spectacular views of the city, the fjords, and the mountains around Bergen. A fjord cruise is something that should not be missed.

Its pretty and easy to get around, plenty of shopping, history or walking in nature so no matter what you want Bergen kind of has it. It has a lack of the usual city, food chain outlets like taco bell, pizza express etc, but i see this as a bonus as you are forced to eat in the local food outlets which are pretty good, and there are MacDonald's if your committed to your fast food.

Bergen is a great place for a short city break.
Bergen is a great place for a short city break. There are plenty of museums covering various different interests, there is a lot of water front to visit if that's your thing as well as boat trips, and there's easy access to nature via the funicular and all the hiking opportunities at the top of the hill. There's a good choice of bars and restaurants all within an easy walk of the city centre.
