Picture-Postcard Norway
Gateway to the western fjords, Bergen is a picture-perfect postcard of Norway at its best. Colorful, wooden houses in UNESCO World Heritage-listed Bryggen contrast wonderfully with the lush greenery of the surrounding Seven Mountains.
For fantastic views of Norway’s 2nd largest city, hop on the cable car to Ulriken Mountain. Alternatively, hike or take the funicular railway up to Fløyen Mountain. With beaches sheltered from the North Sea by islands, Bergen is Norway’s busiest port and a popular starting point for fjord cruises and deep sea fishing.
The fish market in the narrow streets of the historic centre is a popular attraction, while just north is 12th-century St Mary’s Church. Around 1,000 years younger is Bergenhus, one of Norway’s best-preserved forts. Further north is Gamle Bergen, a reconstructed wooden village offering insight into the past.
Cobbled Strandgaten street and Lagunen Storsenter shopping center are just some shopping options, but items aren’t cheap. As you wander around the city look for work by Dolk, Norway’s best-known street artist. Other cultural attractions include many museums and a good music scene ranging from classic to indie.

Well, you have to know that it rains almost daily in Bergen. If you are up to that Bergen is an interesting city. 2 full days however is enough to see it; The main centre at the harbour is very touristic, unfortunately mainly due to many huge cruise-ships coming daily to the port and unleashing thousands of tourists. Great hidden bars in Brugge area and super shopping experience. Access to the harbour markets, really nice food. Funicular was fun, walk to Ulriken was beautiful to escape the crowds. I loved the architecture and history of the town, esp the museum of early Bergen. The public transportation was good, and the fish market was wonderful. Bring your waterproof jacket and pants as it rains there 270 days a year, so we were told. We had two days where rain never stopped (we were there two days total). Also, the restaurant costs were very high…but Norway in general is very expensive for USA travelers and our dollar value has dropped, making it even more pricey.
