I was returning to Christchurch for the first time since the 2011 quake and I was devastated and felt tears welling up. It was the most beautiful city and has been reduced to rubble. The renovation is well under way and a trip with Barry on the tram will give you hope for the future and point out some still standing wonderful buildings. Do not miss it from your journey as it will instil respect for the force of nature and pride in the strength of humans to bounce back. Long live Christchurch
Christchurch was an inspiring and humbling place to visit. To see the devastation and how the people have reacted to it was well worth the visit. Avoid the 'earthquake tourism' tours and wander the city at your own pace. There is an area called Restart where shops and cafes have set up in shipping containers and this was a place full of people and joy. Another thriving area was New Regent St, pedestrianised and with shops, bars and restaurants. We ate at Casa Pubblica, which was South American food and excellent. We also recommend The Last Word for a pre or post-dinner drink. We also used Christchurch as a base for a day trip to Kaikoura for whale watching, and this worked well, as we were picked up at the B&B and gots lots of information on the journey from the driver.
Botanical gardens were nice, and museum was interesting. The tourist info centre there is really helpful. The centre of the city is a ghost town at night but we found the RSA a good place to get an evening meal. It was a bit of a hike to go to the nearest supermarket and back to shop for food. After 5 years post earthquake, it is still half devoid of many buildings in the CBD, so it feels a bit sad and empty. I would not recommend Christchurch as a holiday destination, as there is not much to do, but rather a transit stop for a night or so.
Sadly Christchurch is still recovering from the earthquake and is still largely a building site. There are a few good places to visit such as the cardboard cathedral which is temporarily replacing the damaged one. The gardens and museum. There is strangely a wonderful trolley bus that tours around the centre and you can even dine on one whilst being taken around the circle. It is though a good place to use as a base to visit the vineyards north of the city and Banks Peninsular and Arthur's Pass, which are 'must' places to visit.
I have been to Christchurch before twice, which had been a very nice garden city, a blend of arty and British styles. Unfortunately, the 2011 earthquake really changed the landscape. After nearly 5 years, the city centre is still in rubbles, which made us really saddened and tried to escape that "mood".
Sadly Christchurch is just a shadow of its former self. Rebuilding of the city after the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 has taken a long time. Although there are signs of rebuild there are still many empty properties standing that are boarded up. It is sad to see that after such a long time there still remain a number of homes still being repaired. Very discouraged by the lack of progress.

Almost everything. The house/converted stable is just beautiful. If you're looking to spoil yourself, this is the place to do it. The atmosphere, the decor, and the amenities were all of the best quality. Isabelle and Tim were wonderful hosts. Tim checked us in and gave us some insight into the history of the building (which we really enjoyed).
The staff was always friendly, never saw them not smile. When I ordered room service, they called and said the food is on its way and it was quick as well. They were extremely helpful with any queries and always willing to help. Superb!
