Dusting itself off from a series of recent earthquakes is the seriously stunning New Zealand city of Christchurch. While its old English buildings like ChristChurch Cathedral are being rebuilt, the magnificent Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park sustain its reputation as the Garden City.
Located along the Avon River, NZ’s 2nd-largest city has Victoria Square at its centre. Surrounding highlights include the Canterbury Museum and the Gothic-style Arts Centre. Sumner Beach is a favourite location for locals when the sun shines.
Out towards the spectacular harbour town of Lyttelton is the Christchurch Gondola ride where you can enjoy a sweeping view of the city.
The South Island’s capital is a good starting-off point for extreme sports such as bungee jumping and white-water rafting. The majestic Southern Alps surround the city and offer world-class ski resorts such as Methven, at the foot of Mt. Hutt.
A large selection of motels and hotels are available on Booking.com, including in the vicinity around Christchurch International Airport.
Christchurch is a nice city but there is not a lot to see and do for the majority of travellers who will have more interesting and exciting places to go to and see in New Zealand. It was known as “the garden city” and a little bit of England down under but the earthquakes have altered the city for good. It’s now a city without that character but still a nice place to stop and stay. I would recommend it as a one nighter if you are just passing through. Spend your money on accommodation in other areas of more notable interest. If you are not a tourist then I would recommend it as a city to stay and work and bring up a family. It has job opportunities and sort of affordable housing in the outskirts. It has great accommodation and restaurants and cafes etc etc.
Christchurch has changed for the better,i was born there and now see beautiful and expressive artwork that is really exceptional and out of the box, there is plenty of public and private transport on offer and electric scooters are everywhere you look to use,i found walking around easy as the pavements were done up nicely and the resturants are exceptional,a special mention to barbarellos in the central city library,it has eggs every way and organic healthy options and ho.emade healthy goodness. The sights were amazing around the city and i got great photos.
tram ride was worthwhile and the drivers were very good with providing information on the area. bus ride out to the Gondola ride was cheap at $4 each way or $4 return if your returned within 2hours. C1 espresso was worth the experience and most things were within walking distance.
It was easy to walk around. It was not that busy compared to Australian cities. Trams were a surprise. Destruction from the earthquake many years ago is still apparent & was interesting to see. The river, bridges, flowers, and blossoms in the center were beautiful. Many places to eat. Ate at a Chinese restaurant called Zodiac which was really good. Went to the art museum, definitely worth a visit. Not dirty or noisy. The next day was so surprising to go up to the main mountain View Point lookout to see the views- found so many walking tracks, continued around the volcano rim drive, and again so many amazing walks hidden away for km after km! Many walkers out. Would definitely return again to do walking and the Gondola.
great city to get around as the bus service was magnificent. The best comment was from one of the bus drivers when i asked him where all the road cones were and he said that they had sent them all to Tauranga.
I really enjoyed the city the library was amazing I’m having a really good look around walking , Plenty of restaurants pubs to pick from food options etc I felt very safe, Really good shop was lots of variety to pick from for inner-city shopping
Christchurch
Such a great little gem of a hotel! The hosts were so incredibly kind and helpful and were even willing to drive us to the airport super early in the morning which was beyond helpful! The free laundry was especially helpful as it was the last day of our vacation and we wanted to pack clean clothes, and the garden/lawn area was very relaxing to look out on despite the rain. Room was very spacious with a cute little kitchen that we used to cook some pasta for dinner. Excellent value for the money, cannot recommend highly enough!
We stayed here on arrival to Christchurch and for one night in between renting an RV to travel the South Island for 2 weeks. It was in a great location, a short flat walk to the CBD. The amenities were nice and the bed was really comfortable. The rooms were quiet. We didn't use the continental breakfast option offered whilst the kitchen was being renovated, instead went into town for breakfast and payed a similar amount for a good coffee and eggs on toast. I would recommend this hotel for other travellers in Christchurch.
Everything was amazing, the staff, the food, the drinks, the service was exceptional, we loved the look and feel of the hotel, definitely one of a kind and so rare to find such a historical place in NZ, we would visit Christchurch again just to stay at the hotel, a special thanks to Julia, Daria and Renee for being so awesome and helpful and going above and beyond with everything they did for us so thank you so much :-)
I love this hotel! This was our 2nd stay and it’s my go to hotel in Christchurch because of it amazing location, dwntwn across from the gardens and museum. The 2 bedroom apartments are very spacious, modern, comfortable, quiet and have great views. It’s excellent value for money and there’s a cafe below and a coffee truck outside.
Our stay was only for 1 night prior to flying from Christchurch airport. The location close to the airport was ideal. Although we did not use it, there is a complimentary shuttle service to the airport. Very good car parking at the hotel. The reception staff and those in the restaurant were very helpful and friendly
Staff on reception was very helpful on arrival. The room was spacious and cosy and well equipped. The bathroom was large with a very effective shower. Hotel locations was close to all CBD, Casino and nearby popular activities. Had a short stay but love to come back again and stay for longer.
Great place to stay big room with microwave fridge kettle toaster and big bathroom with jacuzzi bath.Great location 20 minutes walk to city and beside Hagley Park easy to get to airport bus no 3 from 50 meters away from hotel 30 minutes on bus would highly recommend
It’s always a pleasure staying at the race course hotel, it’s convenient if you don’t want to drive to city bus stops outside, handy to airport, meals are fantastic and staff make you feel so welcome, it’s my preferred hotel when visiting Christchurch
Very nice hotel. Modern, new, clean rooms and facilities. Excellent hot breakfast with good variety. Room has mini frig, air con, safe, Very close to airport. Perfect place to sat when flying in or out from Christchurch.
Checking in was incredibly easy, the room was exceptionally clean and the design exceeded my expectations. Compared to some bigger chains, this hotel is now one of my favourites in Christchurch! Well done!
The location was great for UC, Riccarton and Christchurch, and the airport. The manager was really friendly welcoming and helpful. Plenty of food options around.
Christchurch
There is very little I can say. We stay at the Quest every time we visit Christchurch because of its location, ease of access general standard of apartments.
