We didnt really have anything to do with the actual village as we were on a mission to bike to the glacier in the morning and we were departing on return. Its so conveniently placed and of course where ever you are in the village you get stunning 'eye candy'. One of those places that everywhere you go or turn you say "Oh wow!" We ate at the Hermitage restaurant and didnt hold out much hope as we are vegans....the chef went out of his way as did the serving staff to provide us with more food than we should have eaten but oh my it was delicious. Wonderful staff everywhere. We highly recommend a trip to the planetarium, very informative and of course you get to put your newly gained knowledge into practise looking up at the night sky later. Tasman glacier is a stones throw (in our case a bike ride) away, a short walk up to the viewing area and "OH WOW!" Go see it, before it disappears.
What a stunning location even though we couldn’t see Mt Cook we loved being there. We will definitely be heading back it was a magic place to just relax or take up some tours and strolling in the beauty of it all.
The mountains, glaciers, lakes and wild flowers make this place truly picturesque. Among many of the tracks, my favourite is still the Hooker Valley Track. It always surprises you along the walk. Heli Hiking on the Tasman Glacier is another highlight. You will be stunned in the beautiful blue cave.
If you really want to explore Aoraki National Park - there is no place better than the village. Give yourself plenty of time, and attempt to do as many walks as possible. Hooker Valley track is a must do!
The mountains are the drawcard. The views are exquisite and the walks are numerous and varied. Something for every level of fitness, interest and time. The Old Mountaineers Restaurant was a great dining option, but when we were there it was the only show in town. We stayed at the Aoraki Mt Cook Alpine Lodge which was fantastic. The Information Centre was really interesting - two floors of information about the human and natural history of the area. Could easily take an hour+ to look at all the exhibits.
great little village. Only the café/bar/restaurant was open at moment due to Covid19 level 2 and winter hours. Great location for a couple of quick walks if the weather is not good or for longer day walks.
