Not much to do in Oamaru, will recommend visiting the quaint museums, Oamaru heritage museum (pay/donate as you wish) and steampunk museum (NZD$15/pax). both were interactive and we enjoyed it with the helpful stuff. the day was a cloudy and rainy so we opted out of visiting the penguins - they have a live youtube stream of the penguins coming home which we watch. We did visit the penguins tour during the day, which was open to public and saw some fur seals relaxing. We went for the penguins but could have spent another day wandering around the Victorian Precient, Steampunk HQ and lovely shops of Oamaru. I love Oamaru for a visit.
I love Oamaru for a visit. It is a very pretty place to visit with the historic area quite special. There are plenty of great places to eat, excellent shopping and being on the coast it has lovely views of the ocean. The blue penguin experience is well worth doing also.
