Hi, It is better to plan your trip for at least two days. You can enrol your kids to ski school at the nearby school for a longer duration trip so that they learn the art of skiing. Bringing chains with the car will help you to revisit the Whakapapa skiing location often and reduce the commute cost. All in all, it was good to see snow all around especially if you are coming from the northern part of NZ.
Meant to say in my review last night that we had a lovely waitress for dinner, young girl,Lisa? And the main reason we didn't pay for the dinner was because it came 10past10pm, besides one was not eatable.
The staff and food were excellent but the Hotel was understaffed because of "Grab 1" patrons filling the Hotel. The Management should not have allowed the "Grab 1 " to sell more places than the number of staff they had could provide the correct service.
visitor centre so welcoming and helpful about weather forecast, sorting out car permits for leaving our vehicles for 4 days while we do the tongariro northern circuit. beautiful and tidy village, everything was so clean and well sign posted. cafe in the chateau, beautiful food, welcoming, and kept clean with clear rules for COVID. skotel motel was just perfect for our group of 12 trampers doing Tongariro northern circuit was just amazing with perfect weather and all DOC huts were welcoming, comfortable and the views of nature, volcanic landscape, mountains, bushes, scrubs, flowers, rivers, streams, waterfalls, springs, sun, moon, stars in the sky were awe inspiring, precious and irreplaceable. it was so wonderful to only see few people around - huge difference from 2 years ago where it was absolutely packed on the Tongaririo crossing - 4, 000 people on the trail
Nice and calm, but no any supermarkets. Should do some shopping before coming to live here, as it's expensive to buy everything in hotel/resort, as well menu's are not full of many choices. If it's raining, it's not a lot to do, just chilling in your hotels.
The scenery was beautiful, definitely a spot to come for skiing, we weren't able to spend the time enjoying these activities. dinner at the Ruapehu room was delicious, plunge pool was a nice relaxing extra.
Fantastic hotel in one of the best locations. The Northern Circuit of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing was just by the entrance of the hotel. While Whakapapa snowfields is about a 10-minute drive up. Beautiful ski lodge that has aged gracefully. The views are just amazing, even on a cloudy/rainy day. Love the staff, too. Very friendly.
the room was a good size, table and chairs in the room to relax and look at the view. Bathroom was a good size too with a bath. nicely decorated. great facilities in the hotel with the bar and restaurant, movie theatre is a good option when the weather isn't great
