Set in Santa Catalina, 1640 feet from Santa Catalina Beach, Hostel La Vieja Panaderia & Restaurant offers accommodations with a restaurant, free private parking, a bar and a garden. The hosts (a lovely italian couple) were super welcoming and kind to us, they were attentive to our needs. The food in the restaurant was delicious, the breakfast is super complete and yummy. I am not the kind to stay in hostels but because of a last minute plan I decided to give it a try, it was definitely a very good experience and the next time I return to Santa Catalina I will stay here again. The property was super clean, quiet, and well kept! I recomment it to anyone.

Santa Catalina is a quaint little town that unfortunately is struggling now because of the corona virus. I would definitely recommend visiting when this mess clears up. I was there 7 nights and enjoyed the local restaurants and some very delicious food. Great walks on the beach and some amazing sunsets. Was able to kayak one day but unfortunately my diving trip was cancelled because of the corona virus made the best of sitting by the pool and visiting local shops.
A nice little town with good restaurants, nice shops, and good places to stay, and most importantly, tours to go to Coiba! We booked a snorkeling tour with "Watching Dolphin". It was $80 per person and included the 1 HR boat ride out to the islands, snorkeling (all gear) in three different spots, lunch (we had chicken fried rice, pasta with tuna, and vegetable pasta, soda or water to drink) 40mins to swim or sleep at beautiful beach, and ride back. We saw so many beautiful and colorful fish, nurse shark, parrots, camine, sea turtles, and monkeys!
Santa Catalina is very charming. A bit spread out the town is not that close to the surfing beach but it also makes it seem not as busy since everyone is spread out. This is the jumping off point to the not to be missed, Coiba.
Nice place, the sand is dark, not white. waves are only for beginners (surfs). the people or instructors are not that awesomely and good instructors, are only people of the city, that trying to bring people to the surf. but even if you got lucky you will find somebody that can do that very good, and also give you very good tricks, and bring you to the right moves... the best place to stay in the hotel mama ines or Oasis surf camp hotel. both of them are awesomely different, cute and very short to the beach. The kitchen in the oasis hotel is not good, very expensive, with omelets, and nothing Panamanian, I will even say something like a italy breakfasting, but the kitchen in the Mama Ines is awesome and very good with more variety, reaaaalllyy more variety.. what we do, is stay in the oasis hotel and eat at the restaurant in the mama Ines Hotel. to visit the Coiba island is extremely important to do. you should book your trip, and leave. you can book it one day before, even in your arrival. It departs around 8 am, very early, and you will come back around 4 pm. you will do a lot of snorkeling. you can even try to surf or diving or even enjoy the sun with couples beers. up to you. but there is no more activities to do, like, beach volleyball, basket, etc. but it is ok, with Coiba one day, and surf another day. and at the night, enjoy the beach with music, your own music, and drinks.
Santa Catalina is a surfer's, diver's, and snorkeler's paradise for nearly all skill levels. The beaches are large and uncrowded. Plenty of hotels, hostels, and restaurants. A "must go," place if you want beautiful beaches, amazing sunsets, and great surf.
The beach here is nothing special. Black sand with frothy water, cars driving all over the beach with loud music blasting. Lots of trash piled up alongside the beach. There are some waves, but they are not a good enough reason to come here. Coiba National Park is beautiful and definitely worth a 1 or 2 day trip, but do not stay at Santa Catalina. You can stay on one of the nearby islands.
We had a really nice room, clean, comfortable and great location. The real special part was the outdoor shower which was amazing (and very private so no worries!). The restaurant attached does some really delicious food and the staff were friendly (helped us arrange snorkelling tour etc.).
