Love Figueira at any time of the year. Pace seems slower than in the rest of the world, restful, peaceful and safe. I always breath better and deeper when I am in Figueira. For the most part, friendly people, always having a smile for you.
The old town is full of some lovely tiled houses in the Portuguese style. The streets are narrow and full of character. There are symbols of art everywhere. I was amazed to see that it has a casino down one of those quaint Calcada squares.
It was a major holiday, so museums and many shops were closed. The beaches are very pleasant even in winter, there are nice cycle tracks and promenades, plus a boardwalk to the shore. Good walking areas and birds to watch. Exercise facilities/machines free to use along the prom. Good cafes and restaurants, though we ate with friends at their house most of the time. Can heartily recommend "Mar a Vista", a small restaurant in Buarcos on the raised street area near the old city walls. They only serve soup and sardines with a nice salad and boiled potatoes. For a set price you can have as many grilled sardines as you can eat - perfectly cooked and delicious. It's been there 35 years and is tops for the most traditional seaside meal you could want in Portugal.
Great pedestrian area with plenty of restaurants and shops. Good paths along the beach and river area for biking/walking. Very scenic. The beach is huge. There are a few cafes on the sandy part of the beach which serve great food and drink.
Figueira da Foz was one of the famous portuguese cities in 50s and 60s in last century, where the most rich portuguese people spent their summertime. Now, it is a more modern, cosmopolitan, and nicer place to stay. This city combines several tourism services, many hotels, many good restaurants, three sand beaches in a row as the frontline of city, a casino, art museums, and more.
It is a nice location for truly summer holidays. This was my last stop on my trip in Portugal (after Porto, Aveiro and Coimbra). This town is really small and does not have so many things to offer apart from the beach. I visited Aveiro on my trip (same size or slightly bigger than Figueira) but there were a lot of things to do and see there. Truthfully, when the weather was not great, there is not so much to do in the city (Figueira). Restaurants are also not the best - although you can find really tasty seafood in the porto restaurant.
Figueira da Foz
Accommodation was spotless, as were all the public areas. Staff couldn't do enough to help, very friendly, approachable and professional from front of house to grounds people. Pool is beautiful and very the entire area is well thought out and maintained with a small kiddies pool set a little away from the main pool and plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas for shade.
This is a beautiful property in a good location with super nice staff . Super clean and excellent quality - good value for money
