Fundao is a great place with lots of beautiful walks and cute eateries. It's worth a visit to the surrounding villages that have peaceful walks and stunning views. Lovely warm and welcoming people.
We have travelled extensively across Portugal but this was our first venture into the area of Fundão. We loved it. The area is full of wonderful villages, nature, cherry trees and marked pathways that just allowed you to appreciate the beauty of the area. We ate out in several restaurants and we were always greeted so well. Prices are unbeatable and the quality high. The tourist information office in Fundão was also fantastic. We were there for 40 minutes picking up maps and booking trips. It feels like tourism is new for the locals and they want to be proud of their town. We will certainly come back for more.
We actually live locally to Fundao and stayed at Quinta das Oliveiras for a 'treat'. Fundao is quite a pleasant town/small city that often seems to be almost strangely quiet. Despite there being many cars parked in the center there seems far fewer people (very often) than you might expect! There are some decent, low/lowish cost restaurants (particularly lunchtimes) even if they almost all tend to serve very similar conservative menu choices. Restaurants we have favoured include the rather cramped but very good value grill: Na Brasa (on the small street that passes the old town area) and O Julio, where a great menu 'of the day' can always be had. The small cafe, upstairs in the Centro Comercial Acropole (to be fair a rather run down and dour shopping center -- that needs some investment and facelift) is also great value. It's also a good choice for al lunchtime snack to visit the small bar near the train station, Tasca da Estacao, typically busy and popular place for workers for their 'signature' Bacalhau sandwich or (Pork) Bifana. There is also the Ananda Vegan restaurant that is centrally positioned that's good for those who prefer such dietary choices. These are just a few favourites although there are also many other cafes and restaurants too numerous to mention. On the main road out of Fundao center towards Covilha you pass a variety of supermarkets (Intermarche, Lidl, Continente and Pingo Doce) and there are also (probably too many) large Chinese emporiums. Fundao has seen some general improvements and investment over the last decade and has become home to numerous incubator/fledgling IT businesses. It hosts a well supported open air market on Mondays (from early until about 1pm) which features local growers stalls as well as a lot of textile, clothes and garden and farming stalls.
Nice village with different vegetarian options. Really close to Serra da estrela, and several different small villages with medieval streets and XVI century villages, Roman roads and pre-Roman remains. I advise you to go to the tourist office to be informed.
Lovely place to visit much bigger than I thought. Very quiet at night, easy access to lots of other towns and villages from Fundão with great transport links and very reasonable taxis. The river beaches close by are just beautiful spaces to spend time relaxing. Great for walks, climbing, horse riding and retreats. Lots of activities dotted around this area. Monday market is a really traditional farmers market you’ll need to ask where the fruit and veg stalls are, they’re tucked away inside with the usual stalls outside. The cafes are what brings people together here rather than pubs and they are so cheap no Costas here, you’d be hard pushed to pay more than a euro for a tea or coffee here! If you want a tall coffee just ask them for a coffee topped with hot water keep it simple! Found a great Vegan restaurant with a massive warm welcome called Ananda just by the market ask for directions it’s not easy to spot. There’s plenty of places to eat and I can say I didn’t have a bad meal anywhere! They do have smoking in some bars so don’t be shocked!!! Time seems to have stood still here it’s very calming and welcoming. All in all great a place.
Quinta das Oliveiras Turismo Rural is a very nice small hotel. The rooms are well appointed and the bathrooms are good. We stayed only for a couple of night out of season and were the only guests and were very well attended to. The Breakfast was particularly good and plentiful and the owner (non-English speaking) and his son (English speaking) were very pleasant.
Fundão
It was a spacious room, with multiple beds. Very clean. Great windows to open with a view on the street. Good tv and great wifi. Water and kettle were provided. Many cafes near by for coffee. Great location in old area Fundão antiga. Very walkable to many restaurants and attractions in the area.
The breakfast is an event in itself, absolutely wonderful! One of the best I have ever had in a portuguese hotel! Staff was very nice and polite, comfortable quiet room. Lots of amenities, interior parking included, for the price I paid it was a really great experience!
A lovely apartment in the heart of Fundao. It had all we needed. Lovely and accommodating hosts. A thoughtful extra touch of welcome drinks upon arrival at the local cafe and an excellent bottle of wine left for us at the apartment. Thank you for hosting us.
Fundão
Great location for what we needed to do in and around Fundao - just a couple of villages out. Friendly village with a cafe and mini-market, some beautiful cobbled streets and an amazing view. The place was basic, clean and comfortable.
Breakfast was very good. The main common food was delivered. Everything was fresh and tasty. Food was permanently available. The hotel location was excellent as you can easily reach important point in the town
