What I love about Horta is that you feel like you are...
What I love about Horta is that you feel like you are entering an entirely different culture and way of living. I do not like traveling to areas where I feel it is American culture in a foreign place. If I go again I would definitely make more of an effort in learning the language enough to carry on small conversations. Breakfast was a culture shock for me. I am used to protein shakes and toast in the morning. They do not eat breakfast that way. There was only one place that served omlettes or eggs but even there it was not close enough to an American breakfast. Lunch and dinner were fine. If you will be there for a week or more I highly suggest you go to the grocery store for breakfast items like milk, cereal, bread etc. The pastries at the various bakeries are to die for. Horta has a long history with the sea and sailing. Its a walking paradise with sandy beaches and many trails with great views of island and sea. This place will take you back in time, great food and friendly islanders. Its a place where time has stood still for some time, but with all the moderns necessities. We loved the island of Faial and the town of Horta.
We loved the island of Faial and the town of Horta. It was low season and the weather was cooler and unsettled but we managed some magical moments to do a walk or check out a view. Our intent was to do more hiking and the wind and rain prevented much of this from happening. The whale factory museum, the volcano museum and the Skrimshaw museum were all worthwhile visits and when the weather is windy or raining, we still managed to learn some interesting things. Renting a car certainly gives you the flexibility to change up your itinerary with the weather. Be sure to check out the hi-lighted restaurants in the guide books. We really enjoyed some local bars and restaurants. Peter Cafe Sport is a must. We loved a special night out at restaurant Atletico, great meat and local lobster. It is an island, therefore the weather is a bit unstable: it rains, drizzles, and the sun shines, all in the same day! The good thing about it is if it rains it's not for long. The temperature is mild 22 - 24 degrees Celsius in first half of July, and there's always a breeze which makes it very comfortable, but you'll need something warm for the evenings. It's very quiet, not a lot of ppl walking around, but there seemed to be a lot of cars going, more than ppl on the pavements. Eating and drinking: the majority of restaurants and bars seem to be quite upmarket and tourist tailored (with matching prices) and they're on the seafront, by the marina and basically in the town centre. But you can find more affordable places (where the food is actually more delicious and the portions bigger), you just have to look for them as they are situated away from the seafront, in the back streets. Porto Pim beach is great, you can walk there, it's not far from centre and water is calm and warm. Overall we enjoyed our stay, there are whale and dolphin watching trips and other activities, such as snorkelling and deep sea diving. Don't just stay in Horta, specially if you have a rental car...
Don't just stay in Horta, specially if you have a rental car. Purchase ferry tickets for yourself and for the car and visit two other islands of the archipelago - The Pico Island (ferry stop: Madalena) and the St. Jorge Island (ferry stop: Velas) In Horta, visit the Caldeira do Cabeço Gordo, a volcano cone. If you're there on a clear sunny day, you can even hike around the volcano cone. Visit the Capelinhos Volcano Museum - a real treat for geology lovers. The staff was incredibly helpful in getting us taxi from the city centre of Horta, as we noticed there were no cabs at that time after a 30+ minutes wait. The day after, they made sure everything was alright to get back to the airport in time after our hike.
