Nazaré is a very unique village in Portugal, with its own mores and traditions. If you pay attention you'll see plenty of Nazaré women still wearing the traditional seven skirts and so many other details. The town itself is a beautiful misture of traditional and new, with fabulous Portuguese restaurants and many foreigners such as Japanese, mexican, Indian. The fish/fruit market is a gem for fresh food. Enjoy getting lost walking on the sea side, walking through the narrowest streets around it, or dare walking to Sitio da Nazaré (the part of the town on top of the cliff) for some breathing sights of the beach. And of course, enjoy the beach itself and don't forget to try a bola de Berlim.
Pretty little city with an indoor market right across the road from hotel Praia. The young lady selling poncha near the entrance was so friendly and helpful we went back and asked her questions several times. Thank you for all the info. There’s also a funicular up to sitio. Great views but go early. The line gets looooong later in the day.
If you're a surfer it is probably a great location. The beach was packed and I'm not sure how to get an umbrella but if you want to spend the day on the beach it's easy. The square had live entertainment at night. You can take the funicular to get a birds' eye view of the area and to see the lighthouse and church. I enjoyed two great restaurants (Bonta and Tosca Gastrobar).
We went for surf, there were no waves, so of course we're a bit bummed. We had a car and found parking in Nazarè, either up or down, to be a pain. The upper part and the fort/surf museum are the best. The lower part seems like a tourist trap.
Nazare is a bit of a touristic township, has an amazing beach and boulevard and the ocean views are spectacular especially in the evenings with the sunsets over the ocean. The area is easy to drive to from the airport in Lisbon and we loved the area because it is the real Portugal.
Nazare has its reputation on big waves during November-February. Look at any publicity, all goes around that theme. Full year there are good possibilities for outdoors activity also such as hiking, biking and so on. In the summer time of course all is hot and outdoors is similar as in other places. If one wants summer surfing with moderate waves and beach activities, then maybe some other location is better to choose. Nazare summer is very nice and relaxed anywhere else than at the main tourist spot there (lighthouse).
