Kuzhir and the landscapes of Olkhon Island are unique and impressive. At first glimpse of the city and the island the landscapes views sometimes recall landscapes already seen in other places but later they reveal themselves in all their essence. It is a pity that the roads are not paved, even in the city center, and that an important sewerage system is missing, it does not give merit to the beauty of the place. Visiting Kuzhir and the island was an unforgettable experience.
It's a random little town, full of decaying ships and burned down houses, but fascinating, beautiful and different than anything I have ever seen. It is well worth a visit! Also, wild horses and lake swimming and a sauna to warm up in after the lake.
Don't trust speedy boats tours! Ask for reprints and description of any tours you buy. Don't ask the host to book you any important buses to the land. Do it yourself, you will avoid problems!
A bit of a Wild West (or East) feel. Accommodation and catering are cheerful and basic. Visitors are 3 parts Russians on a budget to 1 part European adventurers. Beautiful landscapes and a crystal lake. Hiking, boat trips, vehicle tours, beaches. A bone-shaking trip there and back, about 6 hours each way from Irkutsk with Olkhon Express.
In Khuzhir you can just enjoy the nature and take in the beauty of the Baikal, which is simply magical. It’s a great place to take long walks along the shore and hike on the island without any distractions. From the Baikal View Café close the Shaman Rock you have a great view over the rocks and the Baikal, food is great as well and we also enjoyed their Siberian tea!
Very remote town with unpaved roads, breathtaking views of lake Baikal and sacred places, such as Shamanka rock. The locals are friendly and offer a lot of amenities for the adventurous tourists. It felt very tranquil and relaxing. A great getaway to get in touch with nature in its purest state!
Friendly staff. Cozy and good view from the room.
