It is extra large and expensive city, you need several days to see the most interesting churches, museums and squares. Best option when saving money is to buy food in shops, taxi is expensive and some people can offer driving you for money but I did not like to take risk. The metro is best option to go around. Large chain of hotels may offer good price for a room. There are still traces of communism in people behaviour.
I booked Moscow as a weekend getaway on a whim. Afterwards, obtaining the Russian visa was a rather difficult and dreadful process and hearing stories from our colleagues I must admit I had a rather bleak expectation of Moscow. We went in December for New Years. I must tell you ignore the stories and do not be put off by the visa application process. It is a great city! The food is superb and there is so much to see. So much history and art. I thought a long weekend would be enough time but certainly it is not. I recommend staying near the Kremlin as it is quite central to walk around. The people are very helpful, despite their stoic demeanour and overall I found this city to be absolutely beautiful. I never felt unsafe and although many Russians do not smile nor speak English, they tried their hardest to be helpful, including the police. Recommendations: Cafe Pushkin was spectacular. Gorky Park, the Kremlin, and several of the churches are definitely worth seeing. I also highly highly recommend seeing a ballet at the Bolshoi theatre if you can swing it. It was a beautiful show in a beautiful venue. I would avoid eating at the hotel as there are so many nice restaurants in the city. We ate at the hotel one night and it was overpriced and mediocre. Definitely go out to eat!
Moscow has tons of cultural things to discover, not only the famous sights like Red Square and Tretyakov gallery. I recommend travelling by metro because it is really easy to get around. But one should at least be able to read the station names in Cyrillic. For normal, every day dining that is inexpensive, I recommend the restaurants in the big shopping centres, like the Atrium shopping centre near Kurskiy railway station. Very nice was also Lavka-Lavka, which is a restaurant that serves food sourced from local Russian farmers outside Moscow. If you do not speak Russian, I would recommend you phone the reception of your planned hotel to check if they speak English.
Enjoyed Ice Hockey at Dynamo Moscow and a wonderful performance at Tchaikovsky concert hall by Yaroslavl string Orchestra. Dinner and cocktails at Cafe Pushkin off Tverskaya were exceptional. At the more rustic end the Ukrainian restaurant next to Hotel Veliy was excellent value good service and open early and late. Kremlin and Red Square and St Basil's are unmissable sights but also recommend the Soviet statue "graveyard" in Gorky Park especially the modern installation around the Stalin statue - very moving. If you want to see Lenin note the opening days and hours of the mausoleum to avoid disappointment.Uber worked very well and much cheaper than street taxi.
Kremlin, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier/Changing of the Guard, Malevich exhibition at the Tretyakov XX century gallery, cemeteries, Bulgakov Museum, Cafe Pushkin, metro system, Lab 33, walking around various neighborhoods, being there with very few tourists in the way was fantastic. Our hotel was right behind the Bolshoi and close to GUM/TSUM and many cool neighborhoods/restaurants.

One of the best options in Moscu, near to he metro station and the Kremlin and other turistic places. Besides that the room was super comfortable and the staff of the hotel was very friendly. Constantine if you read this you know you are welcome to Colombia hahaha, he was extremely nice with us, find us the best option to get to the airport and all time try to suggest thing to us, and also save me because he find the paper i had to present in the airport so I can go out of the country So if you to Moscu you have to stay there

The hotel location is very good, close to the tram, metro and train links to the DME airport (15-20 walk to the station). The room was basic but good enough for a business trip. WiFi is free and relatively good too. Staff are friendly and helpful, although if you don’t speak or understand Russian, best to have Google Translate at the ready. The restaurant does a mix of tasty Russian and continental meals, but there is a good mix of other food options in the area too.

This is our third time staying in this hotel and we still like it even though there are a few hiccups here and there. Most staff are friendly. One of the staff even offered us tea and sweets knowing it was a cold weather for us. The security guards are also nice. The cleaners are friendly too. The hotel is near to the subway. Even though it is not at the city centre, it was still good for us as we can still travel by subway or cab.

The guy at the front desk was professional and super, super sweet! He told us to use Yandex instead of google maps and helped us find an electronic store - even called them in advance to check if they were open on New Years. He provided us with New Years presents, including a bottle of nice Russian sparkling wine and crystal glasses to go along with it. Best hotel service I’ve had in a long time!

I can even rate this hotel up to 11, because of the very warm welcome and helpful staffs! The room may a little bit tiny but as I am a solo traveler, this is very big enough. Importantly, the great location in the central of Moscow, with many cafes along the road. Very few steps to Tsum department store and another few minutes to reach the Red Square. Incredible stay!!!
