Weather is unpredictable and it was cold and rainy. One has to plan good for this trip, the Hermitage alone requires definitely more than one day and one has to plan ahead. Make a list of what you want to see and what not because it is just too much for one day. Look out for the ticket machines, no need to stand in the queues unless you want to book for a special exhibition. For the "normal" entrance tickets use the machine and avoid the queues. Overall, don't underestimate, there is a lot to see and do and we definitely want to return to experience the rest of St. Petersburg. Please - do eat Russian and Georgian cuisine and avoid the Burger King's and Pizza. There food is too die for and with a helpful waiter and some reading beforehand it is a culinary experience. Do your homework beforehand, English is a problem. Learn the basic words and show that you are eager to try, they change immediately. Homework, homework, homework beforehand. Book train tickets and other tickets online prior to going and download useful apps, for instance translation from Russian into English and also download the maps prior to the visit so that one does not use data. Free Wi-Fi in places like stations requires a Russian mobile number as required by the Russian communication act. So either get a Russian SIM card or wait until the evenings for Wi-Fi in the hotel room. Get familiar with the Metro - it works very simple but the Russian language is a problem, so know your location where you want to go and work it out before going in there. But use the metro. Overall, it is an experience not to be missed! But - do your homework beforehand.
Favourite places Church on Spilled Blood, our hotel Pushka Inn Hotel was an excellent choice delicious breakfasts and evening meals, only ate at Goose Goose one night superb food, Hermitage 5 mins around the cornerNevskiy Prospekt close by, 5km of shops, Our lady of Kazan Cathedral, Gostinyy Dvor shopping arcade unique, Singer sewing Machine now bookshop and beautiful cafe, walking in the Summer gardens on Sunday seeing all the local people with their families, trip on the city sight seeing bus and boat around canals, visit to Peterhof 19 miles outside St P on the Gulf of Finland amazing - get there for 10am to see musical fountains switched on -allow the day there so much to see: Tsarkoe Selo Catherine Palace 20 miles inland wonderful day out spectacular palace travelled by metro and local bus very interesting and wished we could spend more time in Pushka. can't wait to return to see more - wonderful friendly helpful people would stop and guide you if you were looking at a map even if they had few words in English. Very helpful friendly staff at hotel who spoke English. Felt safe walking around at all times including in the dark evenings Lovely time of year in the Autumn beautiful colourful leaves on trees
Very nice city and the hotel is right in the middle of town(Starbucks just a few doors away from The Corinthia Hotel) and very accessible to train station(10 mins walk) and metro is a few doors away. Just becareful of picpocket because my bag was opened outside the train station and my pouch was stolen.
The golden domes shine on even the dullest day. It was magical. The interiors of the countless palaces and churches are breath-taking. The parks are huge. The people are polite and helpful, doing their best despite the limited English. The food was great. The metro system was super efficient and the luxurious metro stations left me speechless. I loved the canals too and our trip on the Gulf of Finland to the unbelievably beautiful Peterhof palace. The only problem - mosquitoes! Not so much in the city walking around but in our hotel room. They were more than annoying.
We stayed at the Official State Hermitage Hotel which is only 2 years oold but in an beautiful old building therefore having the best of both worlds. It was all wonderful. We ate in different places and they were all good. The hotel had a free minibus to the Hermitage, which was almost empty at Christmas and in any case, the hotel booking allowed us to go to the front of the queues, had there been any. We were able to walk to most places. The hotel organised Taxis to the Marinski theatres. Opera and concert amazing and very reasonably priced. All great.
Hermitage, Catherine's Palace, The Fortress, Faberge Museum all amazing. The restaurants were very good, especially Dom near the hotel. So was the Terrace, and small Georgian restaurant was fun and tasty. Hotel staff gave excellent recommendations. The rivers frozen over , the skies were blue, and it snowed a little. It's bitterly cold, but utterly stunning this time of year.

I must tell that service is wonderful, from the front desk which I want thank you very very much and unfortunately can't remember the names but if later do will write to your hotel thank note. And absolutely helpful concierge who gave me beautiful advices to find good restaurants, and tickets available to Hermitage without the line. The Russian restaurant food is just excellent and Italian too. In Palace you really feel like you are in the nutcracker times, very beautiful like a ballet. Next time I will definitely come again!

Hotel asked us 150 Russian Rub per person as a registration fee in check-in time. She even showed us a paper to prove that this fee was made by FIFA. We didn’t pay it because we didn’t see this sort of payment in Moscow just 5 days ago and it was during FIFA competitions. Then I asked to give us receipt, if they want to get money! They didn’t issue receipt and we didn’t pay 450 Russian Rub. We checked out and didn’t pay it ever never! Be careful! Because hotel asked extra money which we booked in booking.com during high season!

Everything. From the pictures I saw before booking I honestly expected the facilities to be a little old fashioned. Scrap that. It was great! Very comfortable, very clean (and I can be picky!). The staff was kind and discreet. All in all, it was much better than I had expected. The location is extremely convenient too (keep in mind Russia's territory is big so the distance might seem far for some but by Russian standard you're VERY central). I cannot recommend the hotel more - super value for money!

Great atmosphere. The hotel is a converted multi-family aprtment, which has been historically very typical for Saint Petersburg. With that type of the building you get the wide spiral staircase wrapping around the elevator. Amazing location; I was able to walk to most of the attactions, subway station nearby, many conviniet stores, restaurants, cafes. Friendly staff. Clean place. Definitely a bargan for someone who values the atmosphere, cleanliness, and a great location.

It is a cozy and stylish hotel located in a strategic position with respect to main attractions. Staff is friendly and helpful. Gastronomy nearby is rich (traditional Russian, contemporary and Georgian restaurants in a few hundred meters) at reasonable prices. Breakfast is very good with many choices that are freshly prepared. Their recreation room available to hotel guests is a blessing after a busy day walking around the city!

Luxurious ,great decor, modern rooms that hark back to old Russia. The hotel is 3.3 km from the Hermitage but there is a shuttle bus and the walk back along Nevski Prospect is well worth while. Talented rock band buskers the night we were there. Then continue along Rubenstein St and there are numerous great restaurants. This hotel was very good.
