Smolensk is not a large city (population about 300,000, I believe) and it has suffered considerably over its history -- the Poles, the French, and, especially, the Germans all left their marks. But there are lots of worthwhile historical/cultural sites -- three twelfth-century churches, the fine Baroque cathedral, the sixteenth/seventh-century city wall. People are very friendly and the city offers the visitor good value for money (taxis are cheap and efficient and even upmarket restaurants are relatively inexpensive by American standards). The former artists colony at Talashkino, founded by Princess Tenysheva in the late nineteenth century and a twenty-minute drive out of town, was the main object of my visit and well worth the time (striking church, fascinating Teremok house -- work of Sergei Malyutin; mosaic on the church by Roerich). Smolensk is a cheap four-hour ride from Moscow on the comfortable Lastochka train; well worth a couple of days' visit.
Small city with a few interesting features including the cathedral, city walls, and some museums. Museum of fairy tales is small but worth a visit for people of any age, and the history museums are all well stocked and interesting. There's a few nice cafe's/bars/restaurants in the city and you can get exceptional food in the better ones from a fraction of what you'd pay in Moscow. Check out Mayakovskaya bar for chilled vibe and live music, and Dom 20 for the best food in town (possibly some of the best I've had in Russia so far) - where a 3 course meal for two plus drinks was less than 2,500 RUB ($35 USD).
Good place to make a stop. History, buildings, museums, easy to travel in town, view people. Fresh air. Can rain at once. A lot of restaurants with excelent food. Don't be afraid to explore. Good roads (realy).
