One of the benefits of the pandemic for us is that we have done more traveling in Russia. This was our second time to Suzdal in 9 months, each time for a weekend. We will continue visiting Suzdal, we love the history, artisans, antiques, and holiness. We still have a list of things we want to see and do in Suzdal and the surrounding area. We find Suzdal quite cozy which we like and the hospitality services such as small inns, restaurants, guides and masterclasses are becoming excellent.
We loved walking around Suzdal, at each corner being surprised by another beautiful church. We found antiques, medovux, homemade jams, specialty cafes (Ogurets), and beautiful Russian patterned ceramics to enjoy and take home. We were disappointed at the condition of some of the amazing churches and bell towers - we left hoping tourism would make a more positive contribution to the saving and maintenance of the beautiful and powerful history.
Suzdal is one of the most unique places in Russia! Packed with history and traditions, beautiful and serene - it's like riding the time machine! It's worth a several days trip in any season. Go there to stay for a while, give yourself some time not only to visit the attractions but to walk, to breathe, to see the sunsets! You will be enchanted, I promise! And the hospitality, the quality of restaurants and all the small hotels and "guest houses" are wonderful. We come here every year; Suzdal has become my favourite holiday destination inside Russia.
I haven't been to the Golden Ring Towns for a couple of decades, so when I had to visit Suzdal in 2020, I was genuinely surprised. The city is pretty clean, some places are quite modern. At the same time the history is clearly felt though all the town center. The churches are beautiful and numerous. The fields in summer are just stunning with all the flowers and meadow plants. The air is fresh and smells really nice! You might experience lack of the familiar metropolitan establishment like McDonalds, but the local cafes might surprise you (like they did at least once surprised ones, letting us in 15 minutes before the opening time!) No problem getting to Suzdal from Moscow or St.Petersburg, the roads are quite alright even for the snappiest cars.
For those who understand some Russian, a stand-out feature of key sites in Suzdal - especially the Wooden Houses and the St Euthymius Monastery - is that the staff are friendly and helpful. We visited out of season, but it was really fun to talk to the women working in the houses that gave a hint of life years back in the country: they knew lots.
Suzdal is an amateur photographer's dream, although when we were there, near the end of October, there were very few hours of good contrast due to late autumn grey skies. If photography is your thing then come a bit earlier, maybe beginning of October or end of September.
The location of the hotel is its best asset. Close to the Suzdal downtown. It was holydays season in Russia and the prices were clearly overcharged for the quality of the hotel and services.
Stunning view of Old Suzdal from the restaurant, beautiful rooms in cosy cottages, with traditional decoration. Interesting art and craft shops, good spa and excellent massages!
The hotel is in the heart of Suzdal, located within walking distance of the major attractions. Our suite was very spacious and very quiet. The heated flooring was nice!
