Quiet little town surrounded by beautiful nature. There's a (Swedish price so expensive) grocery store for all your needs and a small tourist attractions area with reindeer feeding and petting, and reindeer meat burgers and hot lingon berry juice plus some basic information about the Saami and the historic wooden church that was built in town. And, of course, there is the Ice Hotel. Apart from that, there isn't much to see, but of course there are many activities that can be done out in nature in the area - dog and reindeer sledding, snowmobile tours, nordic skiing, trekking, ice fishing, watching the Northern Lights, ...
Jukkasjarvi was a nice place to stay, and we had a spectacular view of the Northern Lights on our second night there. Curiously, there did not seem much local understanding of how much tourists want to see them, or if there is, the village does not seem to offer much help. Just a few signs and tips on the best viewing locations would have helped enormously. We traipsed around in the very brightly lit village on an extremely cold night looking for a spot to see the lights, and could have easily missed them had we not stumbled across a place out of the artificial lights.
Missed the northern light, but the frozen river and the surroundings are extremely beautiful in winter. Perfect for cross country skiing, walking and dogsledding. Ice Hotel Bar has relaxed atmosphere. Friendly people. Restaurant offered excellent vegetarian food.
Cold in January (-26 degrees!). Makes getting around on foot, with kids, a challenge at times. Small but good supermarket for self catering. Expensive options for dining out. Icehotel and Sámi mueum and café were the highlights for us.
The location is beautiful!!.Warm and nicely appointed self catering cabins which work well in the location. The staff are very nice and infornative and enthisiastic, and make sure you get the chance to buy provisions and take cash out to pay for excursions and bedding and airport transfers. Cash only! Cannot buy alcohol on Sundays! But lots of nice food to buy to make your stay good! Enjoyed the ice hotel visit ...wish we could have hired snow mobiles Excursions are long trips in a people carrier to see wildlife and Northern lights. We sadly didn't see either despite the best efforts of the drivers. Both can be elusive! Excursions are expensive and you need a lot Of cash to pay. I mostly enjoyed walking over the frozen lake in front of Camp Caroli ! Beautiful sun setting over the white lake and children ice skating and playing ice hockey. This was free and my favourite afternoon. Free loan of warm boots and snow suits if needed.
Amazing experience (sleeping in an iceroom)!
