Capital City With Small Town Charm
The charming Slovenian capital of Ljubljana is the only large city in the country. Dominated by Castle Hill with the medieval Ljubljana Castle on top, the city is a picturesque mix of Balkan architectural styles, romantic bridges and scenic views.
Due to two major earthquakes in 1511 and 1895 that destroyed many buildings, the Old Town features a range of styles: from Roman to Medieval Baroque and Viennese Secession. This trend exists throughout the city with many Gothic-style buildings featuring elements from different periods added later on.
Strolling along Ljubljanica River, you'll see the Triple Bridge, connecting two parts of the center and beautifully lit in the evenings. Make a stop at Prešelen Square, Ljubljana’s most popular meeting point with the Franciscan Church of Annunciation and one of the main shopping streets, Čop Street.

Spent 4 days here, which was probably too long as everything could be seen in 2 or 3 days. Must do the Postojna Caves tour from here, a magical experience. If combined with Predjama Castle, make sure you give yourself enough time to get there and see the castle (say 1.5 hours) before the trip to Postojna. Also Ljubljana Castle was very good. You can get around pretty easily on the local buses. That includes going to and from Bled, and the airport (both are about 30 minutes bus ride away). We discovered that travel further afield is also possible from the main bus/train station - with an option including going to Zagreb, which would make for an interesting extension either as a long day trip or overnight stay before returning to Ljubljana. Very nice town.
Very nice town. The downtown is interesting with all those bridges, including the Dragons' bridge. From the castle on top of the hill there is a unique view to the whole town (especially if you go on top of the tower). We had a lunch in "Slovenska hiša Ljubljančanka" which is not far from the bridges and provides very delicious kitchen and interesting interior. A beautiful, hidden secret. Everything from the pure cleanliness, to the feel of safety and social cohesion on the streets. I can't wait to go back. The best part is, everything worth seeing is so close - practically a short walk away - and it's SOOOO worth seeing. Probably the most beautiful city on earth (that I've been to, anyway). It was wonderful, seeing all the sites near the river and experiencing the local talent and the culture vibe.. We needed at least one more day.
