I stayed only overnight twice in a week, but I will always remember how nice it was meeting other people in Erzerum as well as people on buses and trains. There isn't a lot of the old town and castle left, but what is there is worth a visit if you are going for the winter sports or for a walk in the mountains. Or even if you are there for work. Interesting town, with major sights all located within short walking distance of each other. A lot of cafés serving tea and snacks, but not many restaurants offering a good selection of dishes and especially difficult to find meat-free dishes. We did have one meal in a fascinating restaurant - Erzurum Evleri - located in a labyrinth of old houses and crammed with all sorts of antiques and paraphernalia associated with life in the old town. In the center of town so you can do everything by foot. Only the oldest of the son speaks correct English but every single one of them understands the basics and if they don’t they’ll try their very best to help you out. The breakfast is very simple but efficient. Bread (butter, chocolate paste) tomatoes, cucumbers, feta, cheese, black olives, eggs, black tea. Everything as much as you want.
