ALL staff was friendly...even down to the maid in my room...she asked if there was anything else needed and if i enjoyed my stay. Hyatt Regency Trinidad, Courtyard by Marriott Port of Spain, and Kapok Hotel got great room view-related reviews from travelers in Port-of-Spain.
Botanic gardens is a quiet oasis, quite a challenging city to get around as public transport is chaotic and the roads are almost gridlocked. If you are nervous disposition, private taxis are the best option, the pavements leave a lot to be desired so if you are not agile or need a mobility scooter or wheelchair this could present some problems, One of the best evenings out was to the Pan Yards to hear the bands practise for Carnival, the best beach we went to was Las Cuevas, about an hour in a car. Either of the restaurants in Kapok Hotel serve great food.
Stay at the Hyatt, great food, lots to do, they always have entertainment in the evenings, great staff, beautiful view on the waterfront. Port of Spain (and all of Trinidad) is easy to get around, just watch the pot holes! We stopped every where and anywhere for food - lot of great places for Caribbean food. Make sure you visit Yerette, the home of the hummingbirds.
For senior travellers, use the taxis, recommended by your hotel. They will take you on tours and navigate the grid-locked streets, especially around Carnival time. Killarney house on Queen's Park Savannah has a great display of Carnival costumes and their history..
It's an harbour, so no surprise about the context. Love the historical houses, properties, gardens, etc. Located between mountains and the Caribbean Sea, it's very nice. Food, music and ambiance are part of the enjoy. Some areas are bit roughs.
I have reviewed Port of Spain about 3 days ago . my original reason for going to Port of Spain was to go to Tobago . BA only seem to go to Gatwick via St Lucia to Port of Spain. There are ferries and frequent flights to Tobago most days. Port of Spain is a busy Cargo and Ferry port with Pianco airport about 20 km out of town. It is a cultural city centring on the Carnaval( a three day event at the end of February) By the city gate (the bus terminus) and not far from the ferry terminal is a busy shopping centre ( Many clothes food shops restaurants). There is a wide tree lined avenue parallel with south quay road by City Gate disecting the shopping streets where many people walk and eat street food at lunch time. There are beaches just about 20 minutes out of town. My favourite was Mascipe . A beach to the right of a junction by Williams beach to the west of the city. It is fairly private and costs 20ttdollars to park the car.
The island is very small. You can stay in Port of Spain and do day trips all over the island. There are some interesting colonial buildings and a good museum, some good restaurants and several large malls if you are in to that sort of thing.
ALL staff was friendly...even down to the maid in my room...she asked if there was anything else needed and if i enjoyed my stay. The Butlers were also very accomodating...even down to the kitchen when ordering in...they were hilarious and very suggestive in ordering...I LOVE IT HERE! Will be back.
