Situated in Kilindoni, Afro Whale Shark Safari features free WiFi, and guests can enjoy a restaurant, a bar and a garden. Tents are comfortable, staff went above and beyond to secure them during the rain. Awesome tiki hut to hang out in and meet people. Really cool beach vibe with lots of hammocks and beach loungers under tiki huts and beautiful views. Don't miss out on the whale shark safaris they offer!
Featuring free bikes and a garden, Meremeta Lodge is situated in Utende, less than 15 minutes cycle from Mafia Island Diving. Free WiFi is offered. All the staff were so kind and attentive. Our rooms were cleaned every day. The location was beautiful, less than 10 min bike ride to the beach (bikes were available for free). The food was outstanding - 3 course meal with fresh seafood every night for $20. Breakfast was also great!
Set in Utende, 7 km from Rufiji Mafia Kilwa Marine Reserve, Mangrove Beach Bungalows offers accommodation with a restaurant, free private parking, a bar and a garden. Mangrove Beach is perfect to relax and has excellent service. Rooms are very good for the price, you get your how bathroom, double bed and fan. In others hotels in the area you pay double for the exact same. Irene is the perfect host, she can organize activities for you, transport or anything you need always with a smile in her face. The breakfast they serve is top quality, freshly made juicy, fruit, pancakes, eggs, etc. I also love the fact that is eco-friendly, run with solar panels and food locally sourced.
With sea views, Kinasi Lodge is set in Utende and has a restaurant, a shared lounge, bar, garden, outdoor pool and barbecue. breakfast had various options and seemed fresh everyday (with fruits as well). I liked that they used left overs (from cakes, aperitifs, etc.) for snacks the next day, in order to reduce food waste. the owner Peter is very kind and helpful and has lots of suggestions regarding activities or travel related questions. staff in general we're very helpful and the trips were well organized.
Kilindoni is a safe, friendly place to explore. It is small enough to explore on foot, but we did hire bikes one afternoon. Everyone we met was very helpful, and although we tried to communicate in Kiswahili, many people had enough English to help out. We ate most of our meals at the Treetops restaurant at Ibizza Inn, where we were staying - because the food was so good at very reasonable prices. We spent a magical day out on Chole Bay, that included snorkelling, visiting ruins, watching boat building, a walk through Chole village (where we saw some large colonies of flying foxes), and barbecued fish on a tidal sandbar.
We did whale shark diving with Afro Whale Shark Safari, and organized trips to Juni Island and Kua ruins through Mohammed from tourmafiaisland.com. He was friendly and well informed. There is so much to explore on Mafia island, but it is trickier to stay in killindoni & organize tours from there all most are arranged through the lodges at chole bay. However we had a great stay and experience! Amazing beaches, sunsets, walks, forests!
