Not only is the historic town charming, but it is close to lots of wineries as well. There is always something to do in the area. If you are not a great walker or have problems getting around, this isn’t the town for you. It has lots of hills to climb and uneven terrain. My only complaint was that there was not many places for breakfast nearby, but since it was the “off season” I’m sure this was a factor.
Great little town with historic significance. National park has walking trails along the river. The only drawback is that many of the restaurants are closed on Tues/Weds so eating places are limited on these days.
What a pretty village! Located at the confluence of the Potomac & Shenandoah rivers, Harpers Ferry/Bolivar remains largely as it was at the start of the Civil War, with the townsfolk very friendly and welcoming to we three Aussies travelling through on our way to Gettysburg. Found a gem of a restaurant in Bisou, Bisou (on the left as you drive down the hill). Didn't have time to do much walking but the scenery was great and we very much hope to return one day.
Historic and scenic location. Very good and informative John Brown museum. Lots of walkers and cyclists. Fairly close to Sheperdstown/Antietam. Ate at Bisou Bistro. Food was tasty, not memorable. Wine list described a Riesling with an Australian sounding name as Dry Style, the bottle described itself as Sweet German Riesling, a wine we would not have chosen if it had been properly described (should have sent it back but it was drinkable), so ask to see the bottle before they open it.
Harper's Ferry is packed with history and is owned & organised by the US Park Rangers. The US Park Rangers are amazing: they are friendly, very knowledgeable and always polite and helpful. Their approach is imaginative and they are dedicated to make the 'story' relevant to anyone who wanders by.
Excellent historical area. The walk up Maryland Heights was interesting if a little rough underfoot in places. The tour by the NP guide was outstanding. Food places found poor others were closed despite advertised as open.
